Overview Statment

Emphysema is a condition in which the air sacs of the lungs are damaged and enlarged, causing breathlessness.

Causes

Tobacco smoke, marijuana smoke, air pollution, manufacturing fumes

Signs / Symptoms

You can have it for many years without knowing, main symptom is shortness at breath - even when you're at rest, your lips or fingernails turn blue or gray with exertion, or you're not mentally alert

Treatment

Inhaled steroids, bronchofilators, antibiotics, or surgery

Prevention

Stop smoking, avoid other respiratory irritants, exercise regularly, prevent respiratory infections, and protect yourself from cold air.
