First In Math Leader's board

By: Brady F. and Blake J.

First in Math (FIM) is a fun website that helps students practice their math facts. Our school even has a leaderboard for it! To get on the leaderboard, students have to earn stickers. Stickers are points you can earn for playing fun math related games! As you get the stickers, you level up. You start out as a rookie, then move through levels all the way up to a grand champion with 10,000 stickers! One of the best games is the VIFs or the Very Important Facts. It has four stages-addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Each stage has many fun levels with skills to learn to practice all of these facts. Everyone should get on the leaderboard by playing on First in Math!

PTA Updates

Please join us on Tuesday, January 9th at 6:00pm for our PTA meeting. The Superintendent of BASD, Dr. Roy, will join us at this meeting. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

Guidance Goings

Kindergarten and 4th grade book buddies reading together, while they make a new friend!

By: Ms. Birster

So far, January 2018 has really showed us how cold Winter can be. Please help your children choose appropriate winter wear. Dress in layers and drink plenty of water!

During December, I continued to go into classrooms for weekly Guidance lessons. In 4th grade, I read Sorry by Trudy Ludwig and the students focused on sincere apologies. The 3rd graders learned about belonging and giving someone value in Zero, by Kathryn Otoshi. First grade students heard The Way I Act, by Steve Metzger. In Kindergarten, we explored The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg.

As always, if you should need my assistance for any reason, I can be reached at abirster@basdschools.org or at (610) 865-0660. Thank you for the opportunity to work with your children everyday!

Lehigh Basketball Game

By: Nurbanu C. and Rebecca D.

On December 6, 2017, grades 3, 4, and 5 got to watch the Lehigh Women’s Basketball Game against New Jersey Institute of Technology. The basketball game was at Stabler Arena at Lehigh University for Education Day. We got to sit on the bleachers and watch the game. There were many other schools that watched the game, too. Everybody made a lot of noise to cheer on the team and to catch prizes being thrown, like t-shirts and mini basketballs. We watched a video from the Lehigh athletes about how they use the 7 Leader in Me habits. Lehigh won! We all had a great time at the game.

5th grade to the Nutcracker

By: Lauren F. and Addison W.

Fifth graders here at Asa have been watching “The Nutcracker” in music class with Mrs. Rhode. After watching and learning about the ballet, the fifth graders went on a field trip on December 13th to watch this amazing show at Zoellner Arts Center. The Nutcracker grabbed their attention as the dancers were beyond great! Everyone was very excited that they got to see this famous ballet. The Nutcracker is extremely popular, especially around the holidays. It’s considered a Christmas classic. The fifth graders were amused when a strong man, named Malcom from the show came on the stage during intermission! He invited two young fourth graders up on stage with him. They even got to try doing some of his tricks. On the bus ride home, the fifth grade was a buzz. They couldn’t believe how interesting the show was and were excited to tell their families.

Music Room and Library Makerspace Activities!

Winter Musicale

By: Addison G.

On December 15th, Asa Packer held its yearly winter concert. The Kindergarten and Fourth Graders performed fun school and winter themed songs. The orchestra also performed some tunes they had been practicing. In the morning, students performed for their parents and family members. In the afternoon, they sang and played their instruments again for the rest of the students. Thank you Mrs. Rhode and Mrs. Conrad for a great concert. We look forward to the other grades concerts in the spring!

Mini-Mini Thon

By: Mckinzie L.

Every year, Asa participates in a Mini-Mini Thon! This year it was held on December 20th. The Mini-Mini Thon is a fundraiser in the BASD elementary schools to raise money for kids with cancer. It is hosted by Liberty and Freedom students, as part of their Mini-Thon fundraising. THON is a student-led organization at Penn State University which raises money to support families and children with cancer. We participated during our specialists time, and we had a lot of fun! Some things we got to do were parachute and hula-hoop. It’s great to know that while we do this, we help kids too!

Mr. Grinch

By: Josh B. and Kaitlyn D.

During the month of December, you could find Mr. Grinch outside of Mrs. Story's 2nd Grade classroom. Every time students did something good, they earned a heart to put on the Grinch. The goal was to fill the Grinch's heart with many smaller hearts to show all the good things the students did. Check out how large his heart grew!

Sing-a-Long and Parties

By: Leyna J.

Every year, Asa Packer has a day of fun for the holidays! This school year, it was on December 22, 2017. During that day, Mrs. Sherman and the Glee Club start the performance with some holiday classics, then Mrs. Rhode leads a sing-along, and later each class throws incredibly fun parties! This year, we sang songs like Jingle Bell Rock, The 12 Days of Christmas, and Deck the Halls. And during the parties we played lots of fun games! It was a great day! Some of our favorite parts were...well, everything! A big thanks to Mrs. Rhode, the rest of our teachers here at Asa, our parent volunteers, and everybody else who helped organize those events for us!

Leader in Me

Way to go, Nick!

By: Gianna B. and Ella S.

Our school is a Leader In Me school. This means we will work hard and we are stronger when working together! We follow the seven habits. They are habits that we work on throughout the year to make us better students. The first habit is "Be Proactive." The second habit is "Begin With The End In Mind." The third is "Put First Things First." The fourth habit is "Think Win-Win." The fifth is "Seek First To Understand Then To Be Understood." The sixth habit is "Synergize." The last is the seventh, which is "Sharpen The Saw." As a Leader In Me school, we encourage all students to do something that makes them a leader.
