GOSPEL | CULTURE | MISSION
A series through the book of Acts
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” Acts 1:8
When the reality of the Gospel grips His local churches it inevitably creates a culture – a gospel culture – that makes the glory of Christ visible in the world. Yet, in too many churches, this gospel culture is missing. When that happens, churches become fragile at best and hypocritical at worst. So, how do we, by God’s grace, create a culture that reflects the power, beauty, and nature of what God has achieved in Jesus?
We want to invite you to join us for our verse-by-verse study on the Book of Acts. We will see how the gospel transforms the culture, and sends us out on mission, so that the gospel will spread to the ends of the earth.
To help you learn and reflect as we journey through Acts you are invited to pick up a Scripture Journal this Sunday. These journals are available for those who will use them.
Here's what you need to know:
- Child care is available during Calvary Institute (Adult Bible study that meets from 8:30-9:30am each Sunday)
- Nursery (up to 2 years)--Check-in starts at 9:45
- Littles (3 and 4 years)--Check-in starts at 9:45
- Learners (5-8 years)--May check in before worship begins, released to class at the end of musical worship.
Also, we always want to affirm parents who would like to keep all of their kids with them the whole time. We are happy to have the kiddos with us in the worship service. Clipboards and coloring pages are available for the kids at the check-in station.
Things are looking up for Naomi's family. Boaz has proven himself to be an honorable, upright man and is going to marry Ruth. The witnesses to their engagement (the elders of the city), offer a blessing for the happy couple. Famous names in Israel's history are lifted up as models for their marriage - Rachel and Leah; Judah, Tamar and Perez. For those listening to the blessing the names would evoke memories of the well known stories.
Larry Crabb (Shattered Dreams, p.132) suggests this blessing is strange because of the backstory relating to those names. We will be talking about those backstories - how rivalries and deception and jealousy and prostitution could be the basis for a wedding toast. If you want a preview of the background, you can read Genesis 29-35, and Genesis 38:1-37 ahead of time.
Calvary Institute meets at 8:30 every Sunday. Child care is provided.
Especially take a look at the "Preparing for Gathered Worship" section. There you will find resources to help you prepare for and process our Sunday morning gathering. We invite you to use the study questions and songs to prepare your heart for worship, to lead your family in study and worship, and to use in your Life Group.
PREPARE FOR GATHERED WORSHIP
In all of our activities we desire to see three things happening together: community, formation, and mission. Sunday mornings are no exception. We come together to encourage one another, a community united by a common Spirit.
We are formed by the practices of prayer, singing, sacraments, and studying God’s word. We are focused on our identity as a sent people and the question of how we embody the Gospel in all of life.
We employ a liturgy that is shaped by the story of the gospel.
"If we’re going to be a living, loving community, it will manifest itself in a loyalty to Christ." - Alistair Begg
We believe that God designed us to be in relationship with one another and that there is simply no substitute for doing life with others in a shared pursuit of honoring God. Life Groups provide a context for people to live out their faith in the support, accountability, and stretching that is inherent in community.
Life Groups are leader-facilitated and typically meet in homes. Activities vary from group to group and week to week but may involve any combination of eating, learning, playing, sharing, celebrating, praying, and serving.
