The Sacrifice Going Deeper in Worship

Read Genesis 4:2-8

ABEL offered...

CAIN offered...

God looked with favour on Abel's offering and not on Cain's offering. Why?

Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock.

What is God looking for in worship?

Why the fat?

Read Leviticus 3:3-4, 9-11, 14-16

All the fat is the lord's.

How does this connect with your experience in worship?

How were the Israelites instructed to worship God? See Leviticus 1.

But, wasn't that just an Old Testament form of worship?

Read Romans 12:1

What is pleasing worship to God?

Read Hebrews 13:15

How does this connect with your experience in worship?

Our worship should be CHARACTERIzed by sacrifice.

Let's look at how to sacrifice personally before God. Or, how can we establish a life of personal worship/sacrifice to God?

What would God like?

The fat

Read Luke 7:36-50.

Take some time to wait on God and ask him for an idea of the kind of "fat" that you can bring him. What is the costly sacrifice or personal act of worship that you can bring him?

Read Deuteronomy 6:4-5

How does God want to be loved?

For effective times of personal worship...

Use the tools God has given you to sacrifice before him.

  • Your body (action, motion, mouth)
  • Your mind, emotions, affections
  • Your talents
  • Your money

Learn to lead yourself in worship. Don't wait for someone else to do it!

  • Read Psalm 42:5
  • Read Psalm 103:1-5

How can we sacrifice corporately before God?

First, we need to recognize that God loves our gathered worship. In fact, he commands it.

Psalm 149:1

Psalm 67

How is this best done?

Everyone brings their sacrifices.

In order to do this, we need to follow the leadership of the Holy Spirit. He will use the worship leader, your church family and you to build a platform for God to land on. He sits down on top of our praises (Psalm 22:3).

Sacrifice before God by tracking closely with the worship leader. Affirm the Holy Spirit's movement by voice and body.

Be the best #2 ever!

Come to corporate worship prepared to give.

1 Corinthians 14:26 - "What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church." (NIV)

Corporate worship works best when we acknowledge God and each other... when we love God and each other at the same time. It gives God no delight when his family does not get along when they gather together.

In worship, we relate with God. We speak and sing. He listens, speaks and sings back. We listen and respond...

We go to deeper places in worship the more that we can see and hear his heart.

What is on the heart of God?

The nations...those who do not worship him yet.

In the midst of corporate worship, ask God to reveal his heart to you. Allow him to stir up intercession within you.

Worship is giving worth away from self to God. When our worship is self-focused, it loses meaning and falls flat. Lean in to listen to what God is saying and doing in corporate worship. Ask for his heart. Intercede for worship to be raised up in your gathering and in the nations. You will be filled in the process.
