The Upper School Summer Concert started off with a big surprise as our very own Mr Calvey came singing down the stairs starring as Hugh Jackman for our opening number, 'The Greatest Show'. From the very first rehearsal, the musicians showed that this signature song from the hit film was their own, and they sang it like it as well. The piece was followed by a cool rendition of 'Pink Panther', played by Senior Band. Some of the best musicians in the school offered beautifully played solos: a singer, guitarist, violinist, trumpeter, and pianist all took their turns.
Mr Jarvis hypnotised both audience and Concert Band with his Voldemort wand, leading an arrangement of themes from Harry Potter and Star Wars. The Senior Choir retold the story of Jonah and the whale, backed by a percussion ensemble with a Ninevah-inspired beat, and the 5ives Choir put themselves on the big orange plane, singing a rendition of 'Airplane' by the Indigo Girls. Smaller ensembles - the Brass Septet, the Year 5 String Quartet, the Senior Guitar Ensemble, Senior Strings, Chamber Choir, and the Jazz Band - all wowed us with different music, from Pachelbel to the Beach Boys.
The concert ended with everyone playing and singing Stevie Wonder's 'Sir Duke' with the audience joining in, singing: 'They can feel it all over....' Everyone certainly did. The question that is keeping everyone on tenterhooks: Will Mr Calvey return to sing with us next year? We are all hoping....YES!
