Back to Blogging

The FGT blog is back; we're feeling refreshed and ready for the fall!

Events Galore

Those of you who’ve been volunteering with us in the past month know that FGT has been a bit busy lately. Whether you’ve been at builds, in our warehouse or office, or helping with dropoffs and events all across the Bay Area, we greatly appreciate your support! For those of you that have donated backpacks and supplies, thank you as well! Thousands of your donations have been picked up from our warehouse every day the past couple weeks as the school year starts up. And to those of you who’ve been sharing our posts, spreading the word, and offering notes of encouragement: Thank you too! However you choose to share your resources with us--whether time, energy, financial, creative--we couldn’t help these students without you.

As part of their Supporting Our Schools initiative, our partner NBC Bay Area helped us spread our mission locally this Summer. Visit this link to see their feature on our public Mountain View backpack build! Between this build and another public build at the Lesher Center for the Arts, we collected hundreds of backpacks for students.

Family fun involves giving back!

The Chevron Family Theater Festival at the Lesher Center for the Arts was a day filled with creativity. Between an impromptu performance of The Giving Tree, colorful costumes, and lots and lots of balloons, festival goers stuffed backpacks for students at Concord's Cambridge Elementary School.

It took 6 FGT team members to manage the crowds clamouring to buy tickets. Lumentum provided a range of fun prizes--everything from a Starbucks gift card to a Macbook Pro--so there was something there for everyone. One of the most adorable winners was a very determined boy named Logan, who put all of his tickets into the running for a Nintendo Switch and won! All of the money used to purchase raffle tickets was donated to FGT AND matched by Lumentum, making for a total of $14,000 donated to our Back to School Drive!

As an augmentation to their monthly Cars and Coffee event, The Goombahs Car Club hosted a public backpack build in August! Owners and enthusiasts of classic cars were able to donate their time and backpack filling skills to assemble over 150 backpacks for Bay Area students!

And finally, Silicon Valley Shakespeare's productions of The White Snake and Macbeth just closed last weekend. Audience members saw the two Theater Bay Area-recommended plays featuring professional local actors, including our own staff member, Evelyn Huynh!

Evelyn played the role of the comedic Green Snake in the production.

Before and after each show, and during intermission audience members were able to donate money to Family Giving Tree. Thank you so much to the generous team at SVShakes for putting on incredible performances and for partnering with us to support local students!

Volunteers, Drive Leaders, and Corporate Sponsors all play a huge role in helping us collect, check, and distribute much needed school supplies!
