The Emerging Role Of The Bishop

Early Church

Since the early Church bishops were known to be men who had the Holy Spirit within them. They were also known to preserve the union of local churches. The unity of local churches was accomplished by gathering at episcopal synods. At these gatherings important church concerns were spoke about.

The Second Vatican Council

The Council taught that the bishop was not a representative of the pope in a local place, but rather the vicar of Christ in his own diocese. Furthermore, we learn that the role of the bishop is not only within his community but also with the college of bishops where the unity of the universal church is preserved. The whole college of bishops shares with the pope's authority over the church.

Archdiocese of Miami

Bishop Baldacchino is approachable, warm and disarming, a man who worked with his hands and vacuumed his own church in the Turks and Caicos, where he was sent as a missionary from the Archdiocese of Newark. Archbishop Wenski was born in West Palm Beach on October 18. He was appointed auxiliary Bishop of Miami on June 24, 1997 and he was ordained to the episcopacy on September 3, 1997
