Pastors Corner

Junior School Week of Worship

This year we had a guest speaker Pastor Andrew McCrostie, Chaplain for one of our sister schools called Border Christian College, Albury.

Our theme was 'Maker Fun Factory’ Created by GOD, Built for a Purpose. Every morning the Junior School would meet down at Fox Hall for the week long chapel series, that ended on Friday afternoon with a family concert at 5pm.

I was speaking with a mother of our Junior School while at the shops, who stopped to thank me for the week that her children had experienced and shared with me that her kids would come home singing the new song and would jump on YouTube and share the songs with their father and her, much to their delight.

School Update

We are very excited that the scaffolding has come down from the Junior School building!! The students have been very excited to see the flow and connectivity between the Junior and Middle schools and were also excited to look through the glass area to see the play area and beyond. The music pod was a real stand out as well!!!!!!!!

Combined Choir Service - Avondale Church

The Combined Choir made up of students from Wahroonga Adventist School, Central Coast Adventist School, Macarthur Adventist School, Mountain View Adventist School and Hills Adventist School sang at Avondale College Church on Saturday November 3. It was a breath taking event where the singers raised the roof of the church in praise and worship. A big thanks to all the students and parents who attended this event.

Beyond our school yard - Christmas Boxes and Smiles2U Christmas Present Appeal

It is starting to look a lot like Christmas!

For many children this is an exciting time of the year but unfortunately for others due to personal circumstances or illness there are no Christmas trees nor presents and time spent in hospital beds.

As part of our initiative to encourage our children to consider others, ‘Beyond our school yard’ (part of our School Committee and run in conjunction with our SRC) is supporting two charities to help spread joy this Christmas time.

For the fourth year running, we will be supporting Operation Christmas Child (OCC) – sending a shoebox of gifts to those in need overseas. Last year we provided over 130 boxes, which was a great effort, overall the Australian branch of OCC sent 327,841 gifts overseas. We are hoping that this year, our school community can provide 200 gift-filled shoe boxes to children. The SRC will be handing out boxes this week to your child’s classroom. Please encourage your child to collect a box or you can collect one from the office.

In addition, this year we will also be collecting gifts for the Smiles2U charity, which provides love and care to patients in local North Shore Hospitals. The gifts will be go to boys and girls aged 0 – 16 who will unfortunately be spending Christmas in our local hospitals. We would like to encourage your child to bring in an unwrapped present for either a boy or girl aged between 0-16 years and place it under the tree in the office.

Both initiatives will run until early December.

We thank you in advance and look forward to bringing some cheer to those less fortunate this year!

Any questions in relation to this event, please contact Mel Harris melinda@spect.com.au / Lisa White lisa@dwct.com.au / Mr Edwards.

This year during the church service there will be an extra offering (donations) taken up for the Work of Legacy. Also worth noting, there will be a Remembrance Service held at the school on Monday morning, 12th November.

In the coming days, you will be receiving a letter and donation envelope, from the chaplaincy team, to which you can contribute whether you will be attending Saturday's 'Remembrance Service'. CSSA State Triathlon - Thursday, 25th October

On Thursday the 25th of October, 3 teams of Year 7 students travelled out to the Penrith Regatta Centre to compete in the annual CSSA Triathlon. Josh B, Isaac N, Ben W, Elliot Y, Adamo K, Daniel J, Makaela C, Tara R and Angelica Y competed in the team event. In the team event, one person completes one section of the triathlon, either the swim, ride or run. Our three teams did well, showing great feats of teamwork, athleticism and sportsmanship. We are excited to see more students entering in both the individual and team triathlon next year.

Year 8 Camp - 31 October to 1 November

Our Year 8 students put in a huge effort on their camp last week, hiking through the Berowra Valley & Kuringai Chase National Parks. We are so proud of the way that the students persevered through heat, carrying packs, rocky climbs, blisters, endless uphills and the internal struggle to push on.

Some highlights included the beautiful views along the water at Apple Tree Bay, the sandstone cliffs and echoing valleys in the Berowra National park and cooking "choc-chip" damper around the camp fire on Wednesday night - some had more success than others!

While the camp involved hiking and camping, it was about so much more than that: developing the life skills to cope with and overcome the challenges, struggles and adversity that come our way. Students learned to work together as a team, communicate and look out for each other and see the positives in challenges, even when they are difficult. As we come back to school we will be reflecting with our Year 8 classes on the highlights, challenges and lessons learned along the journey. We hope that through the experience there have been life long memories made and lessons learned.

Could we please ask that all students who have hired backpacks and tents return these items as soon as possible - preferably prior to Thursday this week. We will be putting the tents out to dry on Thursday during PDHPE class and checking that all the pegs, poles etc. are included. Thank you!

Athletics Sporting Season 2018

During the Athletics season this year, 3 of our students have achieved outstanding results. Nicholas B, Kanya Y and Cameron K progressed through to the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Athletics Competition. All three students achieved commendable results with Nicholas coming 1st in the 80m hurdles, Cameron coming 2nd in the 100m sprint, and Kanya coming 1st in 100m sprint, 2nd in Shotput and 200m sprint and 3rd in the long jump.

Cameron recently competed in the PSSA athletics carnival where he tied 6th with a time of 25.51s, missing 1st by only 26 milliseconds.

Nicholas continued on to compete at the NSW All-Schools and achieved 2nd in the 80m Hurdles, 6th in the100m Sprint, 7th in the 200m Sprint, and 5th in Long Jump.

We are very proud of these athletes and their achievements and are excited to see them in action next year.

Primary School Leaders Morning Tea - Parliament House

As part of our role as Primary School School Captains, on Thursday, the 1st of November, we were privileged to visit Parliament House. We went there to visit Alister Henskens, our member of Ku-Ring-Gai. We arrived and made our way to the Jubilee room, where we formally met Alister Henskens and many other Primary School Captains in the area. There, Mr Henskens led the adults in one direction and his colleague took us in another. We passed through hallways which were decorated with historic photos, paintings and several other priceless items that made NSW’s history. We were led into a large green room, where we learned about the Legislative Assembly. The room was shaped like a horse shoe and lined with old-fashioned seats. Mr Hensken’s colleague then informed us of the history that had taken place in the room. After we had learned about the Legislative Assembly, we were escorted by another of Mr Henskens colleagues, who took us into the Legislative Council. This room was themed with red. There we did a short role play of what would happen when a Bill was being passed. We learnt that a Bill was essentially an idea for a law. We also learned about the ceremonial Black Rod. Then we went back to the Jubilee room, where the adults and children listened to an inspirational speech meant to inspire us to become leaders of the world. Then Mr Henskens handed us certificates and took us outside for a photo. Overall, the day was a fabulous learning experience for us and we feel privileged that we were able to represent our school as Primary School Captains. We would also like to thank Mr St Mart and Ms Wynstra for taking us there and also being with us throughout the day.
