What is GatorServe?
GatorServe is a UHD tradition that brings together UHD students, staff, faculty, friends, families and community partners to complete projects in service of our neighbors. The fall semester GatorServe event is held in honor of the September 11th National Day of Service. The spring semester GatorServe is held in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
GatorServe volunteers will be provided transportation, lunch, a t-shirt, and all required materials for service projects.
GatorServe involves a wide range of service projects for volunteers to choose from. Projects might range from painting, gardening, neighborhood and bayou clean ups to helping local public schools with various tasks around their facilities.
For GatorServe at MLK Day 2019, we will be focusing our service projects in the nearby Fifth Ward community.
Volunteer check-in will begin at 8:00 AM.
Volunteers should report to Bryce-Dorian Park for check-in.
(2000 Erastus St, Houston, TX 77020)
Volunteers should wear their GatorServe t-shirt (we will provide it to you), and comfortable clothing. Volunteers may be handling paint, working with dirt, and walking through mud. Please do not wear anything you don't mind getting dirty!
Please keep in mind that it may be cold and/or raining. Dress in layers so that you can stay comfortable!
Day of Service
We expect that all service projects will be completed no later than 1:00 PM. Volunteers are expected to stay through the completion of their service project.
Volunteers will be informed of their service project assignment as soon as the information is available.
Please remember that there are individual community members who are counting on GatorServe volunteers. Each of our volunteers are INCREDIBLY vital to the service projects. Please do not register if you do not plan to attend.
We are still finalizing the service projects for GatorServe at MLK 2019. We will share this information as soon as it is available.
You do not need any special skills to participate in GatorServe. We will help you complete each of the service projects. You may even learn a new skill!
Who can volunteer?
UHD students, staff, faculty, alumni, community members, and families are welcome to register to volunteer for GatorServe.
Please keep in mind that some projects are not appropriate for younger children. We typically ask that volunteers be at least 16 years old. If you have questions about projects for young volunteers, feel free to contact CCESL at CCESL@uhd.edu.
If you want to volunteer as part of a group (for example: a fraternity or sorority, other student organization, alumni group, etc.), please register as a group on the volunteer registration page.
We will do our best to keep groups together for service projects.
