Troop 794 Newsletter November 2020 Edition

Important Updates and Reminders

  • VERY IMPORTANT! Please take attendance in your patrols! Since October 1st, our SPL, Will Ballard has asked that we do patrol-based attendance. In this system, each patrol leader assigns someone in their patrol to take attendance for their patrol at every meeting or delegate someone to do it for them if they are not there. Then they will email their patrols attendance to Garrett Rymer (garrettrymer@icloud.com) by midnight on the day after. Multiple patrols have forgotten to submit their attendance over the past few weeks, which can not happen regularly, it shouldn't happen at all. If you belong to any of the patrols except Iron Wolves, you have had at least one meeting in which attendance was not submitted. It is crucial that your patrol submits its attendance, otherwise, you won't get credit for certain requirements that require you to be active in the troop. Make sure to remind you patrol leaders to submit attendance at every meeting!
  • Bring Marbles for the Point System! The PLC is currently working on making display for each patrol's point similar to the one found in the Harry Potter movies for each house. We will be using marbles for the display, each marble will represent a point for that patrol. If you have any spare marbles at home, please bring them to the meeting to use for the display. Please on bring marbles that are green, yellow, clear, blue, or red. Each scout who brings marbles will earn one point for their patrol.
  • Planning on getting a rank or merit badge at the November Court of Honor? The deadline to earn any ranks or merit badges that will be recognized at the Court of Honor is November 5th! The Court of Honor will be held indoors on November 19th. This is also when the patrol with the most points of the quarter is announced and the scores are reset, so make sure to earn a few points for your patrol!
  • Interested in helping choose which campouts we go on next year? Come to the annual outing planning meeting on 11/5. Come prepared with two or more ideas for campouts and participate in influence which campouts we do next year by participating in the final vote!
  • No Meeting on 11/26! There will not be a meeting on Thursday, 11/26 (Thanksgiving). Because of this, the PLC meeting has been moved to 11/12.

November Meetings and Outings

  • Troop Meeting 11/5: This will be the annual outing planning meeting. Mr. Beffel, our Outdoor Coordinator, scouts will share ideas for possible campouts and we will vote on which campouts we will do in 2021. Come prepared with at least two ideas for campouts!
  • Troop Meeting 11/12: Knot Review Night - Knot tying review and a knot tying competition for patrol points. Bring your painter! PLC meeting at 6:00!
  • Troop Meeting 11/19: Court of Honor - We will meet inside the main entrance at the church next to the cafe.

Inspirational Message

Life can have its moments. We can have days that go our way with amazing test scores and having fun with friends and family. Other days it may not be that way, with tough times happening all over the place these days, it can be hard to stay positive, even right now. Even if things go wrong, it can depend on your perspective on how something is played out. This is important to note cause life has its struggles, and if you are down with it, things will seem worse than they truly are. So whenever you can, keep smiling, and stay positive, even if it may seem that it is impossible. If you can’t find a way to be positive, then keep yourself from being negative. Whenever you start feeling down, remember this, cause there is always a way for you to fix mistakes. As John Wood once said, “Things turn out best, for those who make the best of the ways things turn out.”

Merit Badge of The Month

Coin Collecting Merit Badge

The coin collecting merit badge is interesting and fun. Did you know coin collecting is one of the oldest of all hobbies? When you hold an old coin think of all the places it has been and all the people who might have touched it.

This merit badge is about the history of money and the role it plays on human life. It is also about how money is made and how to different marks on coins and what they mean.

In this merit badge you will learn about why coins are valuable and what the different coins look like. You will also learn how different money is today than in the past and how it is made. My favorite thing I learned was how to determine if a coin is valuable. Who knows, you may have a quarter in a drawer in your room that is worth $20!

I earned this merit badge with the counseling of Mr. Williams. My favorite part of the merit badge was learning about and collecting coins from ten different countries.
