"The Death of the Death Penalty"

By: David Von Drehle

Lead of the article: The case of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev absorbed Americans as no death-penalty drama has in years. The saga of his crime and punishment began with the shocking bloodbath at the 2013 Boston Marathon, continued through the televised manhunt that paralyzed a major city and culminated in the death sentence handed down by a federal jury on May 15 after a two-phase trial.

This lead is an example of a summary lead

Who? Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

What? Tsarnaev, the man who set off bombs at the Boston Marathon, was punished with the death penalty

Where? Boston, Massachusetts

When? May 15th

Why? He was punished with the death penalty because his crime was so outrageous and harmed so many people

How? There was a two phase trial which resulted in the death sentence

Conclusion of the article: The facts are irrefutable, and the logic is clear. Exhausted by so many years of trying to prop up this broken system, the court will one day throw in the towel.
