Makanyane Safari Lodge Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

One of South Africa’s premier game-viewing destinations, the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve is home to the Big Five, the rare African wild dog as well as cheetah, giraffe, hyena, and a host of other game species. The all-inclusive eight suite Makanyane Safari Lodge is situated along the banks of the Marico River where each suite enjoys a river view. Andrew and Terri Rice first started bringing clients to Makanyane in 2006 and have now spent more than fifty nights at this quintessential African luxury safari lodge. We are confident you will discover why they have always returned.

This beautiful and diverse African wilderness encompasses 75,000 hectares of widely varying terrain. Makanyane is one of only two lodges in the park with their own private 1,800 hectare concession. This land is reserved exclusively for guests of the lodge and thus there is never any pressure to vacate a sighting.

Following a fifty minute charter flight from O.R. Tambo airport in Johannesburg, you will land at the Madikwe Eastern Airstrip and begin a five day journey that will create memories to last a lifetime.

Guests stay in private romantic and secluded suites with rich African textures. Wrap-around glass walled interiors with uninterrupted views of the Marico River and the surrounding bush, spectacular bathrooms with roll top baths as well as indoor and outdoor showers and a private sun deck make the Makanyane stay like no other in the world.

The Madikwe Game Reserve is one of the few places in Africa where you have an excellent chance of seeing the Magnificent Seven which include; cheetah, rhino, wild dog, elephant, lion, leopard and Cape buffalo.

There are two daily game drives at Makanyane, timed to make the most of the periods when the game is the most active. Guests will enjoy an early morning drive and another in the late afternoon. After enjoying cocktails in the bush, the afternoon drive continues into the night where a spotlight might reveal any nocturnal wildlife.

The executive chef, Mauritz Greeff, combines the freshest local ingredients with flair, talent and imagination to create delicious meals that will add another exciting dimension to your stay. For dinner, guests are always given an option between an exotic or traditional selection. Makanyane has earned an enviable reputation for friendly, personal service, outstanding cuisine and an award-winning wine cellar.

Madikwe is also the one of the best places in Africa to see the elusive and rare African Wild Dog. This fascinating species is unfortunately, verging on the brink of extinction. Energetic and always entertaining, these efficient predators range widely across the changing landscape of the reserve.
