Definition: A metaphor is when you say something is something that it's not - not to be confused with a simile where you compare things with each other using the words like or as. Example: (Metaphor) Bob is a sheep - meaning that Bob follows people around like a sheep. (Simile) I am as free as a bird - meaning that you feel free.
Katy Perry - Firework: The metaphor in this song is pretty easy to find - she is saying that we are fireworks. We are not actually fireworks, but she means to say that we are each bright and unique in our own special way - just like fireworks. She also starts off the song stating how "we feel like plastic bags drifting through the wind, like thin paper about to cave in or like we are buried deep beneath the ground with no one to help us". This shows us how we have hard times where we think we are not special or important but we need to know how unique we are.
TLC - Waterfalls: When they sing the lines "Don't go chasing waterfalls, please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to," she's saying that it's good to have goals but you have to know when you're going somewhere dangerous and that you need to stop before you get too into it. Also in the first verse they sing about how teenagers are rebellious and and no matter what you say, it won't influence their decisions (not necessarily true ). It's also trying to say not to be something you are not.
Sia - Titanium: This is telling us how we are strong - we aren't literally made of titanium, but we have power that we can use for good or for bad. If we stand up for ourselves, then people can't hurt us. When she says, "I'm bullet-proof, nothing to lose, fire away, fire away," she's saying that she can stand up for herself and that we can do whatever we want to her - she'll still bounce back.
Donny Osmond - Mulan: When they say, "I'll make a man out of you," they won't actually turn Mulan into a man - it's saying that this training will make her more "manly" and more suitable to fight the war.
Katy Perry - Chained to the Rhythm: The title has the main metaphor; we are not actually chained to the rhythm. We're just stuck trying to impress other people that we never actually focus on who we actually are. We try to stay with the current trends - as you can see in the video there are synchronised selfies. Also the line, "So comfortable we're living in a bubble, bubble, so comfortable we cannot see the trouble, trouble," showing that - again - we are very materialistic and we don't see that there is trouble going on in the world around us.
Coldplay - Adventure of a Lifetime: It says in the line, "Under this pressure, under this weight we are diamonds." This line shows how their relationship has put so much pressure on them that they have become unique, precious people - like the amount of pressure put on carbon to create diamonds.
Proverbs 13:14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life.
When you have lots of knowledge, sharing it helps bring life and uniqueness to other people who can use that knowledge in different ways.
Isaiah 64:8 But now, O Lord, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You are our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand.
We are not literally clay and God is not actually a potter - he merely shapes our lives and guides us on through our lifetime.
Psalms 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
We are not sheep - and God is not a shepherd. This psalm means that God will guide us through our life and we should not worry about anything.
John 6:35 Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; he who comes to me will not hunger, and he who believes in me will never thirst.’
This metaphor is telling us that Jesus sustains us as long as we believe in him - like as long as we eat and drink, we will survive.
John 8:12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.’
Jesus isn't actually the light of the world in darkness, he represents forgiveness in a world full of sin.
There once was a being who made the world, he created life and his true plan unfurled, but we were all sinners
