Natural Wonder Haley Saich

My inspiration to create my piece came from searching through images online of natural wonder and natural exploration.
I sketched out my idea in my sketchbook before I went onto my final piece.
I wanted to have a variety of butterflies that are in different positions to make it look like they are moving around in the piece.
When I was finished drawing out the outline of my drawing, I went back to my sketchbook to practice the techniques I should use to show the highlights and shadows in the chords of the lightbulbs.
I felt hatch would look best in order to really show the highlights in the chords.
I made sure they all had similar shadows and highlights because the same light is hitting all the chords.
For the base of the light bulb, I felt stipple would be the best option. I wanted to create a variety of shading techniques, and with stipple I was able to really show how the base has lots of curves.
I chose to do watercolor for the flowers and butterflies. I wanted to have color incorporated somewhere in the piece, and I feel it makes the flowers and butterflies stand out from the rest of the piece.
This is the finished piece.
