Pitch For Your Project Case study #7

Sleeping under the Stars – Friends of Thornwell School and Nursery

Friends of Thornwell School and Nursery, a parent association, applied to Pitch For Your Project for some funding to put on a “Sleeping Under The Stars” event for pupils attending their school in the summer holidays.

The need for this project was identified when the school undertook some research to find activities that they felt were important for children to have done before they leave school. The research involved them consulting with the children, their parents, the school and the community. The range of things that were identified were vast but reoccurring themes that were identified were: camping with class mates, cooking on an open fire and star gazing. Further research also found that some of the families did not have access to such educational and cultural opportunities outside of the school curriculum. Friends of Thornwell School and Nursery decided to do something about this and put together a strong and passionate application for Pitch, to turn the ideas into reality.

The project aims to run on an annual basis and by providing a whole school community with the opportunity to participate in this 'sleeping under the stars' event, it will enable all to take part but without any families feeling excluded.

The night will consist of a night camping in the school grounds in tents with a bbq, star gazing activities, lots of laughter and priceless memories made.

Thornwell first event it is estimated that 30 families will attend and 65% of theses will be MHA tenants. Providing them with opportunities to engage in safe, structured educational activity whilst exploring the great outdoors, the night sky and some slightly burnt sausages.

Quote from Alison a tenant on the panel

I loved this project idea and once the tents were purchased, they could do this over and over again making the project sustainable. It reminded me of when we used to go camping with our children, on our own and through the boy scouts. Learning how to cook outside, live without television, computers etc. is definitely a different experience that all children should experience and enjoy.
