Newsletter 27th November 2020

Headteacher Comment

A huge 'thank you to the parents and carers of the children in our Year 4/5 bubble. You have ensured that your children are well placed to return to school next week having been isolating for the last 2 weeks and learning online. I have seen a huge amount of activity on Google Classroom and I hear you have all been fully supporting the live lessons that teacher have been leading as well. Well done everyone. We are really looking forward to welcoming you all back to school on Monday.

In Celebration Assembly this morning, I was able to congratulate 6 of our Year 6 mathematicians who were lucky enough (and smart enough) to have taken part in the Primary Maths Challenge 2020, a national competition. 3 pupils achieved the Bronze Award; Harrison, Adelaide and Miguel. 2 pupils achieved the Silver Award; Scarlett-Rose and Isaac. And, one of our Greenfields pupils achieved the highest possible award, Gold; Riley. Well done to all those pupils who took part and thank you represented our school.

Now you may notice that today newsletter is quite long. Please do stick with it there are some really important notices about events that are planned for the Christmas period. Which takes me on to mention to you all that we are asking children send e-cards and festive greetings via their Google Classroom. This will not only help us save the planet but will also help us to continue to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission in school. Thanks you in advance of your support.

Have a lovely weekend.

The Life Education Bus came to School!

Oh my goodness me, we really have been incredibly lucky this week! Pam from Life Education Centres visited all classes to deliver a session about keeping our minds and our bodies healthy. The children have been buzzing about their learning and Pam reports that Greenfields has been an inspirational place to visit. We were equally inspired by her lessons and will be putting all that we have learned into practice. What an incredible addition to our PSHE curriculum. We are truly grateful for your support to be able to provide such incredible opportunities for our children.

Meerkats Love Singing!

This week, Marvellous Meerkats have enjoyed a bit of nostalgia by listening to some of the wonderful Virtual Singing Assembly videos that were put together by The Voices Foundation earlier this year. The children loved this as evidenced by the amazing level of enthusiasm they've shown whilst singing. If you would like to enjoy some singing with your child at home, please click on the button below.

Act it Out!

This week, in English, Marvellous Meerkats have spent some time identifying and exploring some of the key vocabulary in our new Talk 4 Writing text, Mr Big. To help them remember the definitions of some of these new words, they worked in small groups to think of actions that they could learn, which they then shared with the rest of the class. It was great to see the children working well as a team whilst putting 100% into their learning.

Dragonflies Learn About Health

Dragonflies really enjoyed meeting Harold and Pamela from Life Education. They learnt about keeping their body healthy by eating their 5 fruit and vegetables a day, drinking water and keeping clean and exercising regularly. Dragonflies had an amazing time can’t wait to see Harold again!

Another Wonderful Week of Learning Online!

Year Four/Five have shown us, yet again how resilient and dedicated to their learning they are. Children have worked incredibly hard in all subjects including, singing, computing and even Latin. Thanks to Mrs White - this was the first of many Latin lessons.

A highlight for Miss Kenny was the work the children produced in English where they were tasked with making a prospectus for our school, big shout out to Jake, Eryn and Maddison, there work was truly remarkable!

Also a big shout out goes to Champion Cheetahs for winning the TT Rockstars Battle.

The staff in Year Four/Five would like to take this opportunity to thank parents/carers for supporting the children over the last two weeks, it is with your support and dedication that the children have continued to make progress in their learning, even when isolating.

We are all so excited to welcome the children back on Monday morning.

Here is just a snapshot of what the children have been learning…..

Small or Large Bees

This week Busy Bees have been continuing to explore the artist Jackson Pollock they have been creating on different scales from small, medium, big to large. Using paper, blackboard, felt tip pens, pencil, chalk and paint in our creations. We have explored using different patterns and ways of mark making. They did a fantastic job.

Year 1 Are On The Moon

Year 1 was set homework that was to find out about Neil Armstrong. The teachers were so impressed at the effort the children put into their research and presentations! John sent a video of him reading his handmade book about Neil Armstrong and Antoni even made a space helmet to go with his research! Well done Year 1!

Santa Run

After being a huge success in 2019, we are excited to announce we will be hosting the second annual DRET Santa Run, raising money for the Inspiration Fund, on Wednesday 16th December and we would love to see all our pupils and staff to take part!

Last year over 2,700 staff and students across the Trust took part and raised an incredible amount of money for the Inspiration Fund, which provides the broad range of amazing enrichment opportunities for our students in sport, music, culture and arts.

How does it work?

We will be organising a 20 minute fun run on the school site to finish off the calendar year in style! This will be carried out safely and in school bubbles.

The run will be a sponsored event to raise money for our Inspiration Fund and the amount you raise will determine what you’ll receive to run in on the day, and then keep afterwards.

Raise £5 in sponsorship money and receive a Santa hat to run in

Raise £10 or more and receive a full Santa suit (including beard)

Raise £15 or more and get a suit and Santa medal

Sponsorship

This year, there is the option for sponsorship to be raised through a unique sponsorship page online or using the paper sponsorship forms.

The new online sponsorship page is COVID safe, meaning you don’t need to knock on doors or visit other homes, sees money processed electronically, removing the need for cash, and can be easily shared on social media platforms, text and email. It’s never been easier to raise sponsorship! An information sheet on this can be found overleaf. A step by step guide for this is attached. Click here to set up your sponsorship page:

If you choose to use the paper sponsorship forms, please complete and return, along with collected money, by Friday 27th November 2020 so we can get the Santa suits and medals ordered.

The fastest student and top fundraiser at the school will also receive a plaque, and the top two fundraisers across the Trust will receive a special music, sport or art related prize for their school! Last year, the school with the highest fundraiser bought a smart speaker to allow music to be played throughout the whole school!

Gift Aid: We are able to claim gift aid on all donations with the donator’s permission. This can add a considerable amount to our fundraising total, so please tick for Gift Aid on the sponsorship if you are a UK Tax payer.

Inspiration Fund

The Inspiration Fund enables the David Ross Education Trust to provide our students with an incredible variety of enrichment opportunities across sport, music and the arts as well as cultural activities which we would otherwise be unable to offer. We believe exposing our pupils to these opportunities not only enhances their academic performance, but also ensures each pupil has access to a world class education which broadens their horizons for life beyond school.

As an example, our school and pupils have benefitted from the Inspiration Fund in a number of ways, including: DRET Farm visits, Voices Foundation training and support, sports events incl. Olympic athlete visits, school clubs, masterclasses, All Star Choir, Debating Club and completion (which Greenfields won in 2019), dance festivals, Shakespeare festival and many more.

We look forward to receiving your sponsorship form by Friday 27th November and are very much looking forward to seeing as many Santa runners as we can on Wednesday 16th December 2020.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

September 2021 Reception Intake

If you have a child turning 4 years old between 1 September 2020 and 31 August 2021, you need to apply for their place to start in Reception in September 2021.

Greenfields Primary School and Nursery is now rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, and as with all outstanding schools the popularity of the school increases. With this in mind, we are expecting to be oversubscribed in our admissions for a place in our Reception class in September 2021. This means that we will not have enough places for the number of children applying and some families will be disappointed and not be allocated Greenfields. More information on admissions can be found on our website

The application process is now available on the Northamptonshire County Council website: click on the button below to apply for place at Greenfields. The closing date is Thursday 21st January 2021.

If your child is currently attending our nursery and is due to start in our Reception next year, then we do not want you to be disappointed and miss out on a place. You must submit an application before the closing date as places are NOT automatically allocated.

Should you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact our school office.

Google Classroom

Google Classroom is where you will find Greenfields' amazing virtual classrooms full of chat and lots of hard work! If you have not used Google Classroom before, or you are new to Greenfields, please follow this link that explains how to log on to a PC, Android or Apple device. You will need your child’s email address and password, and the class codes below:

Class Code and Google Link

Teachers are looking forward to posting their ‘Flipping Greenfields’ videos this Friday in time for the weekend. Each one is all about next week’s learning, so will get your child prepared for a flying start on Monday. Research shows that children who feel prepared for the coming week are less anxious about school, happier to get up and go on a Monday morning and achieve better than those who are not.
