News from Mrs. Shire

Parents: Many students have been borrowing our Library books - even if it is not their Library rotation. Library books can be returned at ANY TIME to either the Main Office, or your child can drop them off at the Library.

New books can also be requested at any time using the form in their Library Google Classroom. I will either hand deliver or email the virtual students when their book requests are ready for pick-up. I try to do delivery/pickups every other week.

Happy Reading,

Mrs. Shire

First Grade!

Please make sure your child charges his/her Chromebook nightly. We still have a few each day coming with uncharged Chromebooks. The kids must have headphones each day for in person learning. Also, please remember that water fountains are closed. Each in person learner needs a water bottle. Please make sure it is filled with water, not juice, as first grade friends tend to have spills and juice makes things a bit sticky. Thank you for all you do!

Third Grade

Next week we have our Unit 6 Math test and Cumualative test to revisit our Math skills from Units 1-5. We have introduced all of our multiplication strategies and 3rd Graders should be working on memorizing the multiplication facts to automaticity (within 3-5 seconds). The strategies are there if we encounter an unknown fact. Many of our strategies for the basic facts can be used with larger factors as well. We continue to write across all subject areas and we are currently enjoying our Motion & Matter unit where we investigated magnets, wheel-and-axle systems, Twirly Birds and Tops so far. Please use these last two weeks before many return back to 4-days a week to clean out backpacks and restock your supplies (pencils and white board markers, especially) for the final months of the school year. We continue to accept donations of disinfectant wipes, tissues, and ziploc bags. Thank you for your continued support.

Fourth Grade

The 4th grade teachers are looking forward to meeting with you for our spring conferences next week. If you have not signed up for a conference please reach out to your child's teacher. There are still spots available for you. We'll do our best to schedule a time that is most convenient for you.

Fourth graders took their first test in Science on electricity and magnetism. You can access your child's grades through their Google Classroom assignment. We will be wrapping up our Energy unit by the end of the marking period. Remember the Foss website (which can be accessed through Clever) is a great resource to review concepts being taught in class. There will be one more test on this unit.

In writing, the students have recently finished their state reports (or are close to finishing them) and are excited to share what they've learned by making T-shirts to go with their presentations. They will be working on their T-shirt this week and next and will share with their classmates by the end of the month.

In math, we're more than half way through unit 5 and will be testing before we go on spring break. Remember to use the family letter to find ways to incorporate math into your everyday lives! This unit is heavy on fractions and can be easily practiced with cooking or baking with your children. They can always practice these skills through the Connect ed website by playing the games or reviewing the lessons.

We recently finished our small group novels and the children worked on projects to share with their peers. They're excited to start our new whole group novel The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Ask them to share what they've learned about Edward so far!
