Rap Influence on Students By Owen grandoli

“Music is a part of our everyday life. Whether we listen to it while doing homework, or we hear it from a car passing by, music is integrated into everyone's life. “Music is everything, without music there is no purpose to a lot of stuff,” says a student at Paso Robles High School.

Most Popular Music Genres

Music is personalized and independent, and can influence your emotions, and how you think. Rap and hip Hop music has grown substantially in recent years, and has grown to the most popular genre of music in America, and still growing. The Rap industry has had much as an 18 percent growth in sales and streams in only the first half of 2018. Some rappers actually use their music to tell a story, or make art. One example is Childish Gambino, whos music is a reflection of how he was a black man growing up in america, but wasn't necessarily connected to his blackness. Although there are artists creating meaningful music, most popular rappers have a different meaning in their music. Lil pump is one of the most popular rappers among teens, but his lyrics don't tell much of a story. His most popular song has lyrics like; “Still slangin’ dope in the ‘jects.” And “I'm on that Xan and my B**** off the coke.” The rap industry is filled with artists like this, and teens are idolizing them and bringing their lyrics into their own lives.

Although rap is heavily revolving around drugs and violence, there are students who believe the lyrics have no impact on themselves, like Colton Berry. "Personally I don't let it effect my own actions." Students like Colton have lost friends due to actions that came from idolizing rappers. "He used to be a straight A student played a lot of sports, but now since he's been listening to so much rap music and trying to live that life, he has turned into a “stoner”, stopped caring about grades, and cares less about important things in his life." he says about one of his close friends.
