Blanche DuBois Living in a Fantasy

Blanche DuBois, when first introduced, seems a innocent girl with financial struggles searching for love. However, as the play progresses, one can see that Blanche is nowhere near innocent. She is anything but pure and tries to avoid reality and live in a fantasy world of her past.

At an age of about thirty, Blanche doesn't like for people to see her in the light in fear of people seeing who she really is. When in the presence of Stanley's friends, she lies of her age and why she is not a school teacher anymore. However she does take a liking to Mitch and eventually tells him of her deceased husband, but Stanley later finds out the truth about Blanche. When he tells Mitch the truth it turns him away from her, leaving Blanche feeling helpless and even more instable. Blanche constantly tries to turn away from reality and return to her past, but Stanley eventually destroys the rest of her by raping her and then having her sent to a mental asylum.

"Come here. I want to kiss you, just once, softly and sweetly on your mouth." By kissing the young man, Blanche feels she has returned to her past and feels free and able to do anything.

"I don't want realism. I want magic!" Proof that Blanche has been trying to live in a fantasy the whole time.

"Mitch crosses to the switch. He turns the light on and stares at her. She cries out and covers her face. He turns the light off again."

The act of Mitch turning the light on reveals Blanche's age, and she fears the light is revealing the truth about her.

"She allows him to lead her as if she were blind."

In this sense, Blanche is blind to the world of reality as she is still trying to live her fantasy. The doctor can see this and acts as a gentleman to her to help lead her through the chaos of both her fantasy and the real world interfering with each other.

"As a matter of fact there wasn't no wire at all!" Stanley can see through Blanche and tell that she is lying again to make it sound like everything will be fine when she leaves.

"I've been on to you from the start! Not once did you pull any wool over this boy's eyes! You come in here and sprinkle the place with powder and spray perfume and cover the light bulb with a paper lantern, and lo and behold the place has turned into Egypt and you are the Queen of the Nile! Sitting on your throne nd

Blanche is more of a round character because at first she seemed fine but them the lies and fantasies were revealed completely changing one's prospective on her.
