#NUSScotLGBT: ICYMI

Our LGBT+ conference brought together LGBT+ activists from across Scotland to debate policy and set the direction for the campaign in the coming year. The day's democratic proceedings were kicked off with the election for next year's LGBT+ Officer.

After a close run election, Leo Sieber, the committee's current Trans Rep and a student at the University of Strathclyde, was elected into the post. Leo's manifesto included a commitment to intersectionality, improved communications with LGBT+ officers and societies, and more focus on trans and non-binary students. Later in the day, delegates elected a new LGBT+ committee - with results being announced next week.

In the afternoon, delegates voted on policy for the campaign to adopt into its work. The motions were wide ranging, but all policy submitted passed, meaning that LGBT+ Campaign now has policy :

  • To develop resources and campaign to create greater understanding of LGBT+ issues among teaching staff at colleges and universities
  • To use new online platforms to enable communication and sharing of resources between LGBT+ student activists and groups across the country
  • To support EU students as we move towards Brexit. and protect the rights of EU students
  • To make steps towards having Non-Binary and Ace Representatives on the NUS Scotland LGBT+ Committee, and renaming the Bisexual Representative and Caucus the Bi and Pan + Representative and Caucus
  • To campaign for more inclusive drugs policies on campuses across Scotland

Throughout the day, at caucuses and in breaks, delegates networked and met other LGBT+ students across Scotland - building a network of activists to deliver the policy passed at conference!
