Extended School Year (ESY): What Is It and Is Your Child Eligible?
For some students on IEPs and 504 Plans, a long break from special education and services can result in significant regression. One possible solution is Extended School Year (ESY). ESY services are specific to your child's needs and are designed to help prevent substantial regression and/or substantial difficulty in relearning skills. The Massachusetts Department of Education's website has a Question and Answer Guide on ESY Programs which provides an overview of the basic requirements for ESY programs and regulations regarding ESY eligibility. ESY should be discussed during your IEP Team meeting. If you have questions, contact your child's Case Manager.
Summer Camp and Enrichment
There is a lot of summer fun to be had that is not connected to school but finding a camp or experience that is right for your child can be challenging. Spedchildmass.com and Access Recreation Boston have wonderful listings of camps, camp fairs, and other resources available throughout the year and throughout Massachusetts. Kidscamps.com has a search tool that allows you to search by interest, area, overnight, day, and more. STEM, special needs, adventure and arts are just some of the offerings they list. Closer to home Concord Rec has a fantastic summer camp with a ton of offerings including Camp Three Rivers Inclusion Program. Run in collaboration with Camp Three Rivers, "it strives to provide participants of all abilities with a well-equipped environment in which behavioral support, activity adaptations and friendship facilitation are the main objectives."
