The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has a long-standing working relationship with the Barbados Defence Force (BDF) and the Regional Security System (RSS), especially in response to public health emergencies. It is no surprise that with the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, both entities are once again collaborating with PAHO.
The BDF and RSS have been instrumental in facilitating distribution of critical COVID-19 related supplies and equipment, procured by PAHO, and destined to its Member States in the region. The logistics for this process is coordinated through the Public Health Emergency (PHE) Unit at the PAHO Barbados Office.
This is just an example of how the team has been functioning…PAHO procured essential health supplies for COVID-19 response for Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
A total of 162 boxes containing 3,919 PPE kits were delivered to the PAHO Barbados Office on Monday 20 April 2020, they were collected by a team of BDF soldiers on Tuesday 21 April 2020, and by Wednesday 22 April 2020, many countries acknowledged receipt of their donations, ably delivered by the RSS.
