Headteacher School Update. 27th March 2020

RESPECT - INTEGRITY - COMPASSION

Introduction

I hope this school update finds you well in these very challenging times. As a school we have been working extremely hard to move towards online learning whilst ensuring those most in need are fully supported. I am aware information is coming out at an incredible pace and often can change from day to day. I hope to use this update to try and pull information together and ensure you have the most relevant information at the time of publication.

In a very short space of time we have managed to enable the vast majority of our school to stay connected and to continue with their learning provision. In any change project there are set backs, but the speed at which the current changes were implemented will without doubt leave us with some challenges. Please be patient and we will do our best to support every pupil and family the best we can.

Currently we have daily management team meetings online to share information and problem solve any issues. To date we have been focussed on ensuring young people can continue their learning at home and thankfully the vast majority can and have been engaging well with the content and their class teachers.

Although we will continue to prioritise learning and support for families, we are also moving to planning for the next term and beyond given the uncertainty around the timings of the current restrictions on movement. I will use this update to keep you up to date on issues such as transitions, option choices, new timetable and many other normal school activities and processes we have.

I have been overwhelmed by the kind words we have received from parents / carers regarding our support for young people and their learning. I have shared this with our staff who continue to show a level of dedication that is second to none.

I have stated many times in my communications to parents and carers that as a school we are here to serve you and the community. In these most difficult times I want all of our families to know we are here and will do our very best to support you in any capacity we can.

Kind regards: Mr Black (Headteacher)

SQA Update

We recently sent out the link to the most up to date information from SQA: https://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/93658.html

Mr Clancy (DHT Performance) and I met with all Faculty Heads individually to discuss all pupils in the senior phase and determine our next steps forward. We still await further guidance, however, where FH's have identified pupil evidence that may support our estimates further, they will be contacting pupils to request pieces of work over the next week or so.

IF THERE ARE NO REQUESTS TO YOUR CHILD, THEN IT IS BECAUSE STAFF HAVE A RANGE OF EVIDENCE ALREADY THAT WILL SUPPORT THE SUBMISSION OF A FAIR ESTIMATE.

AS STATED IN PREVIOUS COMMUNICATIONS WE ARE NOT ABLE TO SHARE THESE ESTIMATES, BUT CAN ASSURE YOU THAT WE ARE DOING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO BE FAIR, POSITIVE AND ENSURE NO PUPIL IS DISADVANTAGED.

LEARNING

The vast majority of pupils are now accessing their learning online and engaging well. However, as time goes on it is important that all pupils are progressing and I would ask any parent or carer to contact the year group link if there are any issues around access.

Recent questions and enquiries from our parents include,

  • Trouble accessing microsoft teams: it would appear the sheer demand has overwhelmed this platform and staff are in the process of switching content over to Google Classrooms.
  • No internet access or device to access learning: we tried very hard to determine what pupils may require support for this before schools were closed. I am also aware that situations may occur as time goes on. Please contact your year head link who will support you in finding a solution.
  • The volume of work:¬†we are aware that our rush to ensure pupils had learning content has now resulted in a concern about how much to do and when. We are currently discussing this as a management team and looking to put out some more information to help parents and carers in the coming weeks. The priority at present and until the Easter break is to ensure all pupils can and are accessing their learning.

Moving forward we hope to develop a weekly/termly schedule. This is to support our pupils and families organising their tasks for completion each day and week.

Staff Wellbeing

As we develop our online learning and engagement I must also consider the working practice and wellbeing of our staff. Throughout this first week they have given 100% to ensure our pupils can stay connected and learning.

Like everyone else, across our staff, we have a range of challenges from supporting family members to childcare whilst managing the day job!

Therefore, as an immediate change starting this Monday 30th March 2020, I will be re-establishing a lunch break! I am sure many pupils are now experiencing, like staff, a very different context for learning (a lot in front of a screen) and it is important that we consider their wellbeing.

Therefore, I will be instructing all staff to break between 12pm and 1pm. This will support our school community to move, rest and recover.

I would like to thank you for your support in this matter.

S1, S2 & S3 Google Library Classroom

Our own google classrooms for the library!

We know that we have lots of passionate readers here at Lornshill Academy. During this time of school closure we know how important it is to keep reading and to share what we've read with others. There are also a huge number of fantastic resources online for reading which we will be sharing with you through this classroom. Please share your thoughts on any books you have enjoyed reading during school closure below:

As you can see, we will hopefully use the Stream tab for pupils' book reviews and will gradually populate the following sections in the Classwork tab:

Links to Author Videos, Litflix, If You Like...You'll Love, Reading Challenges, Recommended Reading, Links to Literacy Activities, Easy Readers, Links to Free Ebooks, Links to Bargain Ebooks, Book Awards, Comic Creators Club, Subject Link.

A reminder we finish on Friday 3rd April 2020.
