Atlantic Specialty Coffee is excited to have the opportunity to partner with The Harries' family who have owned and operated both the Oreti and Chania Estates since 1926. The geographic area of Thika is 40 km northeast of Nairobi at the foot of the Aberdare Mountain range which reaches as high as 3,962 masl. The farm is situated on a plateau between valleys that have permanent flowing rivers whose catchment is protected by a fence covering more than 400 km around the range, reducing human and wildlife conflicts, and preventing encroachment and deforestation.
Standard Kenyan processing method of fully washing coffee is generally practiced, however Boyce Harries, who is the 5th generation of the family is experimenting on a limited basis, with Natural, Honey Process and even Cascara.
Of these experiments, his French Mission - Natural Process has proven successful and is of great interest to barista’s at World Barista Championship and National Barista Competition events. The property also has a small dairy enterprise with its own bio-gas units installed, from which the slurry is used as a natural fertilizer to reduce reliance on compound fertilizers. Both businesses support the local community and people.
