Fort Laramie was the second fort built by the government in effort to protect settlers moving west.
Multiple nations and US officials gathered at Fort Laramie to ask Natives to stop following the buffalo and said that if they settled permanently in on area the government would protect them.
The Fort Laramie Treaty, in 1851, gave the land west of the Mississippi River for the Native Americans to settle on if they stayed there permanently. It only lasted until gold was found in 1859 at Pikes Peak. To this day Natives are still arguing that the land should be returned.
