Nonconformity

“I ought to go upright and vital, and speak the rude truth in all ways.”- Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance

In 2014 music artist Charli XCX published her new single Break the rules . Its a song about teen rebellion and rule breaking and it rationalize why teens don't want to follow rules and want to be insubordinate to rules and the people who tell them.

The Song "break the rules" talks of how the singer doesn't want to go to school and she is telling other kids to follow her in he rebellion against education and they don't need education to help them find something they are passionate about, In the song she expresses the feelings that she interprets go through the average teen's mind while at school and that most teens are by definition are non conformist. The singer both expresses this through her words and her video for this song

This song is a great reflection on what Nonconformity is defined but in a more modern way and it uses a great example of what piece of society is closest to the idea of Nonconformity and that is the average teen. The average teen doesn't follow rules to the letter as adults would they improvise or twist the rules to their liking which in turn breaks them. Yet that is the base of the principle of Nonconformism set by Ralph Waldo Emerson and other nonconformist.

The reason behind the use of the quote above is for the fact that this song is written by the singer for a purpose to make known the fact that the teens are speaking out and rebelling against school in an upright way, To tell they do not like being told what they need to do they prefer to be free to make their own thoughts and do their own actions. The artist heavily implies this in the lyrics of the song with a high probability that unknowingly she is supporting Nonconformity.

Importance of nature

"just living is not enough... one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower." ~hans christian andersen

This movie that was made by Disney in 2008 is about a robot that saves the earth ( which is an arid wasteland with little life on it because of the pollution) by telling people in space that there is hope for earth ( because of the flower in a boot wall e found that is in previous slide" and the humans learn the importance of nature and head back home for earth to help grow plants and make it more livable.

This movie was also made as a little message by Disney about what the wold could look like with modern day pollution and why the world should fix the earth's pollution through their habits and Disney teaches the world the importance of nature through this movie. Another thing Disney did was not long after this was made Disney earth documentaries about humans effects on the earth through their actions such as hunting and the burning of fossil fuels.

The connection between this movie and the quote above is that living isn't just being alive its about the things around a person that are also living and co existing with everything in that moment and the movie also supports this through the main character who shows these lazy and dumbfounded humans who are just surrounded by technology and shows them there is more to life than just eating.

simplified life

"As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler; solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty, nor weakness weakness." ~Henry David Thoreau

This movie starring keanu reeves that was made in 2014 which is about a man who lived a hard life as a hit-man and then his life gets simple but but ends up tragic and sad but then he gets back to work as a hit-man and then he and his life get more simplified literal and morally as he gets back to his job as a hit-man.

The reasoning behind why this movie is an example of simplified life is because the main character has worked as a hit-man. which barely ever gave him a chance to stop and enjoy the simplicity of life for it wasn't what his job called for and when he is finally at peace and his life takes a turn for simple it gets thrown back into his old life. This helps show the basic foundation of what nonconformist wanted to show that a simple life wasn't easy to obtain yet easy to enjoy.

The connection to the quote for this movie is that the main character struggled to get his simple life and when it gets taken away nothing is able to stop him from obtaining it again. yet through the small period of having a simple life he became stronger and happier about life. This movie shows the outcome and reward of a simple life and the outcome of the lost of such a type of life.

Favoring Intuition over Reason

"Trust instinct to the end, even though you can give no reason.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

In 2016 Marvel studios made one of the best movies of their studios establishment "Deadpool". In the movie the main character loses everything slowly and through this he just does not end up as a person who makes logical decisions. He is a hit man who goes on the hunt for those who did him wrong and punish them for their actions.

The explanation of the connection be tween this movie and favoring intuition over reason is quite simple. The connection between the two points of this topic is that the main character doesn't do what normal people would think he would for he doesn't think with his head nor does he think at all he just does what he feels is what is necessary for the current situation whether it be jumping off a building or blowing up a armored truck he does what he feels rather than what is reasonable.

The connection between the example and the quote is that the main character just does what is necessary whether it deserves a reason or not. This is a main connection and reason between the two topics. This example is one of the most easiest and modern examples of intuition over reason of today.

Self- Reliance

“Be yourself; no base imitator of another, but your best self. There is something which you can do better than another. Listen to the inward voice and bravely obey that. Do the things at which you are great, not what you were never made for.”― Ralph Waldo Emerson

In this movie made in 2012 " The Hunger Games" the main character has to compete in a free for all against trained killers and she was made to do this so she had to trust herself alone to protect herself and her fellow teammate from her home. If The main character wishes to make it home to see the ones she loves she must kill and rely on no one but herself for there are few she can trust.

This Movie is well connected to self reliance for the movie is about this person who is put against trained killers to entertain the higher classes of her nation and has no one to look out for her but the few friends she makes for the fact that it will make it easier to kill the harder opponents. So the main character has only herself to get her and a fellow member of her nation out of this deadly situation. The story makes this a great example of self reliance and puts it in a great view as a key part of life.

The connection between this example and the quote is quite easy. The main and obvious connection being that the story is of a person that was made just to be put against another person and be something most are not ..... a killer. This quote was well made for this modern example for it says the bases of the full story line of the movie and it helps prove and support how this movie as an example for the nonconformist belief of the importance of self reliance as a major need in life,
