Celebrating our Teachers Miss Rachel

Teaching Experience:I was first inspired to dance by my mum, who is also a ballet teacher. I started off with assisting and then gradually began taking classes when I was 17. It was then that I discovered a love for teaching dance. In 2012 I relocated to Palmerston North and began teaching at another local dance school. In 2014 I joined the DanceWorks staff and enjoy teaching the ballet and contemporary students.

Qualifications: I started dancing at a young age in a small performance company that my mum directed. I then began learning ballet at Nadine Antoinette School of Dance in Gisborne and continued my ballet training at Saba Young Ballet in Auckland where I completed all RAD ballet exams up to Advanced 1. After leaving school I went into the Bachelor of Dance programme at AUT. The next year I transferred to a Bachelor of Performing Arts Majoring in Contemporary Dance at Unitec where I trained for another year under some leading NZ dance tutors.

What classes do you love to teach: I love teaching all age groups, but there is nothing quite like seeing the joy that lights up on the little faces of my youngest students as they experience dance for the first time. I think it is an amazing privilege to be able to share the beauty of dance with these little people.

What do you love to do in your spare time:I am a mum of 3 girls, they keep my life very full! In my limited spare time I’m usually reading and trying to fit in a bit of study. I’m working towards a BA in Educational psychology at Massey (will hopefully graduate before the kids are grown!)

Something interesting about you: When I was a kid I thought ballet was for 'girly girls’ and I really wasn't one of those! Haha. Little did I know I was already learning ballet steps from my mother who taught me at home. I was 8 when I began taking actual ballet lessons and then it became a life long passion!

What do you love about teaching:I love sharing my own passion and love of dance with others and I love seeing my students develop their own love of dance and seeing them grow in skills, knowledge and confidence.

Why do they we love having Rachel here at DWS? Her passion for dance especially for classical ballet is beautiful, she has such a calm air about her and continues to inspire us all to lift our game. Her strengths are my weaknesses together we make a pretty awesome team.
