The world requires people who can devise, build and create cutting-edge products, and design engineers. Design and development engineer Research engineer, Industrial designer. Design engineers research and develop ideas and systems for manufacture. They also work to improve the performance and efficiency of existing products.

A design engineer is a general term for a person who many be involved in any of various engineering disciplines including electrical, mechanical, chemical, textiles, aerospace, nuclear, manufacturing, civil, systems, and structural /building/architectural.

You'll use CAD software to test the dimensions and weight estimates of your ideas. PayScale.com reported in September 2015 that most entry-level mechanical design engineers earned a median of $60,773 per year.
