Community Gardens CANISIUS COLLEGE - Spring 2017

Welcome to our Community Garden. Several programs, including a combined effort between the Environmental Sciences program, the Animal Behavior, Ecology and Conservation program, the Environmental Studies program and the Biology program are in the works. The joint effort involves the development of experiences associated with an Institute for Sustainability. The institute will integrate academics, community culture, and service to the community; all centered around environmental sustainability - an ever-important concept of our time. These experiences are focused on the tenents of service learning and the Jesuit Values, where students from diverse programs are given the opportunity to engage with the neighbors and the larger Buffalo community to act on the mission of the institution – “being men and women with and for others.” In addition these programs are working to establish sustainability in all facets of our daily experience.

As part of the Institute's initiatives, the Community Garden will become a living classroom, an Interdisciplinary laboratory, and a meaningful place to think about and practice Canisius's values and mission.

Community Garden Spotlight

A Community Garden Champion - Sr. Pat Brady

Canisius College has a unique and special mission to live out the justice that is born of faith. Faith in God, faith in people and faith in the value of creation are at the heart of our mission. We are women and men with and for others who care about the other whether human, animal or plant. We believe in a just and equal world which belongs to all of us. We are called to transform and to be transformed, to be challenged and to enter into worlds that are different from our own and equal to our own. We are called to care for creation in all its forms and to ensure that it has a future. Our community garden is not only a reality but a symbol of our mission. We want to see the family of Canisius be a place where all are welcome to participate in nurturing our garden: students, professors, neighbors. We want to live out and share in sustainable efforts that will continue because we are committed.

Giving Day / Alumni Ambassadors for Giving Day

We are raising money for the development of community gardens. The gardens are an initial and very visible step in the process of developing this institute. The Institute is focused on the tenents of service -learning and the Jesuit Values, where students from diverse programs are given the opportunity to engage with the neighbors and the larger Buffalo community to act on the mission of the institution – “being men and women with and for others.” The link to the Giving Day page for the community garden is included below for your convenience.

Giving Day is April 26th (see page below and link to our giving day page - you can use this link on giving day). Giving Day provides you an opportunity to donate to the continued development of our programs. The donations are used to further the programs and projects that are a huge part of the success that our students and community members enjoy. Please donate if you feel you can assist us in moving forward - all levels of donation help our students and community members.

In addition, the program is looking for ambassadors to donate to the Community Gardens project and to use their social media accounts to challenge other Canisius Alums to donate to this project. Please contact Robert Grebenok at grebenor@canisius.edu if you are interested in serving as a giving day ambassador for the Community Gardens – Thank You for your Support and Participation!
