WHAT IS RECONNAISSANCE

A mission undertaken to obtain, by visual observation or other methods, information about the activities if an enemy or potential enemy, or to secure data concerning the environmental characteristics of a particular area (ADRP 3-90)

RECON MISSIONS

AREA- Focuses on gaining info on the enemy, terrain, civil considerations within a prescribed area. Area recon is normally smaller than a zone.

Types include: Point, Contact, Civil, Tracking

ZONE- directed effort to obtain info on routes, obstacles, terrain, enemy, civil consideration. Deliberate and time consuming.

ROUTE- gathers information on a specified route and terrain where the enemy could influence movement.
