Thursday, April 6, 2017: When being stranded on an island there are many dangers that you may face. One of the many dangers could be not having enough food or running out of food to eat. Another possible danger about being stranded on an island is running out of a fresh/drinking water source. With out food or water a person would obviously die because those are a necessity to survive. Without shelter a person is most likely going to be affected by the weather. By getting frostbite, hypothermia, too much heat or just the rain. When being on an island there are many dangers that may come your way.

Monday, April 10, 2017:Rules

Travel in 2 or more

Do not go out at night

Share resources

Clean up after yourself

Communicate effectively

Do your job

Do not kill each other

Out of all of these rules I say the most important one is to communicate effectively because if you're stuck on an island with a few other people you will need to communicate and do things together and know what to do.

Wednesday, April 12, 2017:One of the themes for this novel is survival, many things within the book can contribute to this theme. One of the most important contributions to this theme is that they're stranded on an island and are trying to survive. There are also "beasties" and a "snake-thing" that the boys need to avoid so they do not get hurt or injured. The boys also have to find a food source, a clean water source, and build shelter. There are many things the boys need to do to survive.

Tuesday, April 25, 2017:Ralph has said, “This is a good island” (Golding 35). Ralph’s pronouncement will prove ironic; it is definitely NOT a good island. What problems do readers already know about? Explain why these problems prove this is NOT a good island after all.

Readers know this is not a good island because of the geography of the island. There are rocks everywhere, a Coral Reef which won't help, there is only a fruit forest and people can't live on just fruit, There are caves and mountains. The geography of this island doesn't it make it a very good island.

Wednesday, April 26, 2017:Card Activity

Symbols are physical things that represent abstract ideas. The following are some of the symbols from the novel The Lord of the Flies.

Meat symbolizes the temptation the boys face on the island.

Piggy//Democracy--Piggy tries to make everything fair.

Piggy's Glasses//Survival--Piggy's Glasses provided a fire for survival.

The Island//Isolation--They're all alone on the island.

Smoke//Rescue--The smoke can be seen by other people.

The Platform//Civilization--That's where they all come together.

Conch//Law and Order--The Conch symbolizes leadership in speaker letting all voices be heard.Piggy tries to make everything fair.

Simon//Goodness-- Simon is the peace maker of the group.

Painted faces//Anonymity--They're being anonymous.

Meat//Temptation--The boys are tempted to get meat.

Friday, April 28, 2017:Describe the Beast that seems to be stalking the island. Use the text as backup for your info

The younger boys on the island have claimed to see the ''Beast". Phil descried the beast as "big and horrid'' (85). The littluns also said the beast came out at night (85). Another thing Percival said about the beast is that it lives in water (85). Sam and Eric have just claimed to see the beast while watching the fire. Sam describes the beast by saying "It was furry. There was something moving behind its head" (100). The twins also said the beast had wings, it sat up, there were eyes, teeth and claws(100). It also chased the twins and almost touched Eric(100). Jack and Ralph haven't seen this "beast" but they believe it lives on the tail end of the island due to they have never been to that end of the island.

Monday, May 1, 2017:Name at least two things the boys are doing or have given up that show how they are now operating on instinct and no longer trying to follow the rules of society. Explain your answers with information from the text.

Since the boys have been on the island for awhile they're starting to do what they please and not go by the rules. One rule they're breaking is communicating effectively. "I got the conch-" "Conch! Conch!"(101). Either they're talking out of turn or all shouting out at once. Another rule they're breaking is to not go out at night. "Did anyone go out?" "I wanted-to go to a place-a place I know"(85). The boys have broken a few of their rules since they've been on this island.

Thursday, May 4, 2017:Two rituals people are most familiar with are weddings and funerals. Pick an event (a wedding or a funeral). Make a list of at least 3 phrases people use at the event you picked. Using one of your phrases, explain why your phrase is helpful in the situation.

Wedding:

"I do"

"Something Olde, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, A Sixpence in your Shoe"

"Today is a celebration. A celebration of love, of commitment, of friendship, of family, and of two people who are in it for forever."

A ritual is something used at celebrations or at times of sorrow. Weddings have many things said at every wedding. One of the more famous sayings is "I do" because, that saying is the piece the soon newly wed say to confirm they want to be in this relationship together. The phrase chosen is one of the most iconic sayings at a wedding. The couple says "I do" because they're the ones confirming their marriage and not the minister. This specific phrase is one of the few things said by the duo at their wedding. After they each say "I do" and the ceremony is over they're starting a new life together.

Monday, May 8, 2017:Choose a character, either Ralph or Jack and explain the effect seeing the Beast has on the character you have chosen. Use textual information to support your answer.

Ralph, Jack and Roger have claimed to see the beast, seeing the beast has had different effects on all. The character I have chosen is Jack. After seeing the beast Jack wants to make a sacrifice to it. "This head is for the beast. It's a gift"(Golding 137). Jack has started his own left the group he's in and started his own. Jack wants to please the beast, he thinks he has done so by giving the beast the head of a pig. "Jack held up the head and jammed the soft throat down on the pointed end of the stick which pierced through into the mouth"(Golding 136). Jack has been trying to please the beast for awhile when he's part of a beast himself...

Thursday, May 11, 2017:Retell in your own words what has happened to Simon. Use textual evidence to help you create a vivid paragraph.

Simon has witnessed the sacrifice of a pig, and has seen the dead pilot up on the mountain and he is the peacemaker of the boys. Everyone was at Jacks feast and doing their rituals when Simon walked in. Someone claimed he was the beast, so they let him in their circle they were dancing in. He was standing in the center which is where the kill goes. Since everyone thought he was the beast he was beaten to death by everyone on the island. His body then fell and was dragged into the ocean by the waves. "Simon's dead body moved out toward the open sea"(Golding 154). Simon is the second boy to be killed so far while being on the island.

Simon saw a signal fire and decided to walk towards it.

Friday, May 12, 2017:In life people create groups. These groups might be at school, in sports, in extracurricular activities, and through religious organizations. Explain what needs groups fill for people. Explain both the positive and negative aspects of being part of a group. You may relate this to our novel, or you may make it a person reflection of your own experience.

A group is a thing were people or items are put together. There are groups everywhere such as school, churches, public events and even in novels. The type of group I'm going to be focused on today are school groups. A group at school makes someone feel like they belong somewhere. Being apart of a group has many aspects, Some are you belong with people and you feel welcomed. A bad side of being in a group is that you may get judged or people may not like your group. A group needs something put together to be considered a group, like a group of friends. Groups are something made in society naturally.

Here's a group of ghost for example.

Monday, May 15, 2017:“Which is better - to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?”

Using this quote, take a stand. Pick a side and explain why your decision is best on this island here at the end of Chapter 11. Don’t forget to use textual evidence to support your answer.

In this novel all the boys are in one group together and follow the rules and agree. Then it becomes the other way and they're playing survival of the fittest. Following rules and agree is a better decision to follow because everyone needs to work together. If they decide to hunt and kill their numbers will go down which will not help them survive. "It's only me Ralph"(Golding 187). They aren't working together to be rescued. To be rescued and live civilized they must agree with each other and make up rules to follow.

Tuesday, May 16, 2017:Today’s assignment requires you to think about the book as a whole. Your directions are to choose a picture and a quote from the book and add it to your blog.

For the text (7-9 sentences), explain why you chose the picture and the caption to summarize your experience with the book.

"Hullo"(Golding 200).

My picture is a picture of the coast which represents the boys being rescued. I chose the quote above because that is the first thing the officer says. I chose this picture and sentence because they symbolize the platform where they had there Assembly's and were a group together. The coast also represents the ending of the book and all the loose ends being tied together.

I would say my overall experience with the book was good. I really enjoyed this novel and liked reading/listening to it. It had some very intense and suspenseful moods, you never knew what would happen next. There was a lot of foreshadowing which was great so you could kind of infer what was going to happen next. Overall I would rate this book a ten. It had a lot of detail and imagery which helps the reader. This book may have been one of my favorite books I've ever read.

Wednesday, May 16, 2017:Today’s assignment requires you to write a letter to a student who will be in my class next year and this novel and your opinion about the following items

What did you think about the novel?

Explain how you best enjoyed the novel: the British man, reading on your own, or me reading.

The Adobe Spark Blog

Dear Eighth Grader,

The Lord of the Flies is a fascinating, suspenseful novel filled with detail and imagery. The piece has so many different scenarios with action, adventure, suspense and even mystery. One of my favorite things about reading this book was you never had to read it yourself, which personally helped me because when I read in my head it's more monotone but when the teacher (Mrs. Lyda) or the computer read it they are enthusiastic and don't sound like a robot. Having the book read like that helps me personally see things better. Another thing that was helpful remembering everything was the Adobe Sparks Blog. In the blog you write/type about important things that happened in the novel, it's also quite fun to just sit and type how you feel about the piece for 30 minutes everyday. I'm sure anyone who reads the novel next year will enjoy it because of all the great things about it and it is just a great book to read anyways.

Sincerely, Former Eighth Grader.
