FearSphere MEDIA Kit H N R Y

Welcome to the sphere

Our second game in what is a line of experimental interactive arcade games, Fear Sphere is an exploration into the VR space in a very unique and strange way. Equipped with a custom flashlight controller and a giant plastic bubble, two players must work together to survive the task at hand.

Players must work together to escape the building alive. Outside the sphere are a set of blueprints are used to relay direction information to the trapped player inside.

a blend of hardware and software

Fear Sphere was developed out of a desire to push the boundary of traditional virtual reality experiences. Using an MPU6050, Arduino Pro Mini 328, and a simple joystick we constructed a controller which acts as portal to another world. The interior is powered by an OPTOMA ML750 short-throw projector which allows us to project the game world onto the inner wall of the sphere.

The player inside the sphere must use the flashlight controller to navigate themselves through the chaos that is the in-game world.

The sphere

The sphere itself is made of simple HDX 10 ft. x 100 ft. Black 6 mil Plastic Sheeting and a LOT of black duct tape. To achieve an effective projection surface, the inside was painted with a dark gray custom latex primer paint. This gave us a uniform, matte surface which would provide a vibrant image, while simultaneously blocking out any ambient light.

Fear Sphere took home the very first alt.ctrl.GDC award in March 2017.
