ODI Matters Summer 2019

Happy Summer! In case you were wondering about the weather in Danville, it has been hot, humid, and rainy. I know that might be hard to believe with most of our shining stars across the globe, but it's true.

Updates

Recap

We launched our first ever Diversity and Inclusion Awareness Week during May. We hosted Talking Circles, heard from our New Horizon Scholars about their capstone projects, and held an Intercultural Award Ceremony. We honored our graduating seniors, awarded two Kitchen Table Awards to the RISE (Refugees Immigrants Speaking up for Equality) Executives and the International Student Services Interns for their service to the Centre Community this year, and heard from Jessica Chisley about finding our way. To wrap up the week, we asked yall to write what diversity and inclusion means to you on a Cowan banner, proudly displayed for all to see. We also compiled a little "Year in Review" video, including events sponsored by our partners across campus that focus on diversity and inclusion. For LGBTQIA+ Pride Month this past June, we hosted a campus and community Pride Potluck in the Intercultural Suite. See pictures below!

Quick Takes

We will be a little bit of everywhere during Orientation this year. We're training our Resident Assistants and Orientation Leaders, providing sessions for first years during Orientation, tabling at Expo, and, of course, welcoming folx to the Intercultural Suite. Come see us and say hi!

In Fall 2019, the Greek Life Office will be assisting Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. in offering membership to eligible Centre College students. For more information, please contact Scotty Rainwater at scotty.rainwater@centre.edu and be sure to check out their table at EXPO on Thursday, September 5th.

The Whitney M. Young Scholars is a program of the Lincoln Foundation empowering disadvantaged youth to overcome adversity through education. Centre College was a location for one of the program's Summer Institutes from June 30th-July 12th, hosting 28 students from Louisville on campus. Students attended classes on college-readiness, dance, science, math, and technology. They also went on field trips to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, a Lexington Legends baseball game, and a performance at Danville's own Pioneer Playhouse. The students learned a step routine choreographed by Centre senior, Jojo Marcellon and will perform the dance at the awards banquet on Friday July 12th. J.H. Atkins was the Coordinator for the program on Centre's campus and was assisted by Amanda DeWitt.

TIX Corner

  • Title IX Office has two interns this summer. Emily Shields and Katie Freeman are both rising seniors and have been working in the office since May.
  • The interns are working on updating the Title IX website with more resources for survivors and flowcharts designed to better explain the reporting process. Website updates are happening in collaboration with ITS and Communications.
  • New graphics created in partnership with Centre Counseling and the Department of Public Safety will be rolled out early in the fall semester. These graphics will continue to educate the student body about what these departments do on campus.
  • Also in progress are simpler versions of the Sexual Misconduct policy and information about the rights of parties involved in Title IX processes. These will help those individuals better navigate the system and clearly understand their options.
  • New campus prevention programming is being developed for RAs, Orientation Leaders, and the Compass Program students. These programs will offer resources and information to our student leaders, helping them make a difference on campus.
  • For more information on programming or to request a workshop for your organization, contact Sarah Cramer at sarah.cramer@centre.edu.

HERConnect

Stronger Together

OUR PURPOSE: The Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC) is a national, nonprofit coalition of institutions working to advance equity and excellence in the higher education workforce. We believe an inclusive higher education workforce depends on systemic change best achieved through institutional collaboration, the development of innovative tools that can be shared and leveraged, and an engaged network of individuals committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.

MEMBERSHIP: Nationally, HERC serves over 700 higher education institutions, hospitals, labs, and affiliated employers united by a shared commitment to cultivating a talented workforce as diverse as the people we serve. Centre College started the newest national chapter of HERC in 2017, known as the Greater Kentucky HERC, becoming the host institution that supports members in the state of Kentucky and the southern portion of Indiana. Meredith Bruner was named the Greater Kentucky HERC Regional Director in January of 2018 and currently supports 29 member institutions in the region. In addition to increased visibility for our commitment to diversity and inclusion, we (and other HERC members) receive cutting-edge recruitment and training resources to support our human resources, faculty affairs and diversity offices.

VISION: To promote equity and excellence in higher education recruitment worldwide.

MISSION: HERC advances the ability of member institutions to recruit and retain the most diverse and talented workforce and to assist dual-career couples.

Do more with HERC

Harnessing our collective power, we reduce the costs of national recruitment advertising, outreach, and training while fostering regional collaboration between institutions and addressing local recruitment and retention challenges.
