Top of Their Class: An Overview of Senior Spotlight Week By: Malcolm Saas

Next week WKHS will be doing an entire week dedicated to hardworking seniors called Senior Spotlight week and students can now vote on which seniors they would like highlighted. The goal is that students and staff will vote for who they think is the hardest working and most compassionate senior at WKHS this year.

Meghan Humphrey, the library media specialist here at WKHS, is one of the biggest contributors to making this event possible. “We had several reasons for organizing this event, we thought this was a great way to recognize the many accomplishments of our senior class… We also thought it would be great for our seniors to hear about the ways their accomplishments or achievements have impacted or made an impression on the staff members and students who nominated them for a variety of reasons.”

So when can we vote for our favorite senior? Humphrey says the ballot for students and faculty to nominate these seniors will be open from Jan 25-27,and only seniors can vote for who’s the best in each category - extracurricular achievement, academic achievement,personal/community achievement. Seniors will receive a link to vote in their email and can vote through the 27th.

Student Body President, Brady Cloyd, believes that this event will really give our seniors the recognition they deserve because many haven’t been able to do many out of school activities. “We decided to do this event because a lot of our seniors have lost the opportunity to be recognized in sports, extracurriculars, and even outside of school activities” he said.

In reality, Senior Spotlight Week doesn’t just last a week, according to Cloyd, “The finalists for our senior pack awards will be recognized on Friday, February 5th, at the girls basketball game. They will receive a certificate and gift basket courtesy of the Kilbourne activities club”.

Senior Spotlight Week is a light in a dark tunnel for many seniors here at WKHS, some getting the recognition they deserve for doing amazing things while trying to combat a pandemic, and they aren’t just surviving in this world, they’re thriving.
