Our 2019 Soaring Eagle

Mrs. Nettie Mae Lindsay

CLARENCE CARR SOARING EAGLE’S AWARD

This award was named in honor of Bishop Clarence Carr in 2008. It is presented to an adult 65 years or older who have soared above life’s obstacles and still stand tall as true warriors of Christ. Because of their endurance, they are an inspiration to all. As each storm (age, sickness, etc.) comes, they have weathered it and continue to press toward the mark of the high calling in Jesus Christ.

Tell us why this person should receive this award

Mrs. Nettie Mae is a true soaring eagle! The mother of 10 children and blessed to reach the age of 95 in March, she is a role model and inspiration to everyone whom she meets. Many church members say that when they visit Mrs. Nettie Mae, she makes them feel better. Many say, “She helped me more than I helped her.” Mrs. Nettie Mae has a Christian personality – always cheerful/happy, willing to help someone, and willing to do what she can to help. During our annual Christmas program, Mrs. Nettie Mae leads us in the Christmas carol, O Holy Night. Everyone looks forward to hearing her sing. All ages, young and old, are touched by her singing and her cheerful, positive personality. Also, during our recent Black History Month celebration Old Time Sunday, Mrs. Nettie Mae said, “My children have me dressed like an old person!” She has soared above the challenges of life – the passing of her husband, George, 1 daughter, Mary at age 2, and 2 sons, Jackie and Phillip. Even though her physical body is 95 years old, her spiritual health grows stronger each and every day and has never wavered. She is a living example of a Godly, virtuous woman who leads by example.

From her daughter, Frances Tyson

To this day, she still enjoys making at least 4 cakes at Christmas and makes cakes and pies throughout the year with help. If she could, she would travel the world. Mom is a comedian and she keeps us laughing, sometimes intentionally and other times not....just being herself. Just today, she has just baked "a big cake all by herself" and she is proud of her accomplishment. She has a memory better than mine...(laugh out loud)...she enjoys having people visit so she can tell the stories of the yesterdays when she was young....a wonderful historian. She is known as "Granny" to many. Although she is no longer able to tend the vegetable and flower gardens, she still enjoys them. During the summer you can find her sometimes with her daughter Ruthie canning and freezing the goods from Ruthie and her husband Henderson's garden.
