Denis Patrick O'Grady CAS Highlights

He is a Professor of Communication and has been part of EMU for 24 years. Dr. O’Grady’s area of expertise is interpersonal and family communication. His research focuses on people who are marginalized and stigmatized in some way. Dr. O’Grady and three of his graduate students just finished a study analyzing the personal ads of inmates. He explained, “The ads are similar to what you would find on Match.com. They are written by incarcerated men and women who are looking for a friendship or romantic relationship. We did a textual analysis of their ads in terms of how they dealt with the stigma of first being incarcerated, and then second, whatever crime they committed. In other words, how do they manage these stigmas in a way that still makes them appealing to somebody who's reading their personal ad.” Moving forward he wants to do a similar study of online profiles of hard-to-place children seeking adoptive families. When thinking about his classes and his students, Dr. O’Grady believes that being there for his students is the most important thing he can do right now. He said, “Reaching out to the students and letting them know that, even though things have changed in some ways, we still care about you. We're still committed to your success and we're here for you. We are just doing it a different way.” Thank you Dr. Dennis O’Grady for your passion and dedication! #TRUEMU #EMUCAS
