The Early Church

In the earliest days bishops preserved the Unity with the Universal Church through gathering in episcopal synods there they adresses questions of concern. It was important for the local Churches to stay connected to the Universal Church. This showed that the Bishops of Local Churches had responsibility for the Universal Church.

Second Vatican Council

The second Vatican Council emphasizes the cushions role as a teacher and a pastor confirmed through Holy Orders. The Collage of a Bishops preserves the unity of the Universal Church. The Doctorine of Episcopal collegiality states that the whole collage shares authority over the Universal Church. Bishops only have authority with the Pope.

Archdiocese of Miami

Archbishop Thomas Winski was appointed the fourth Archbishop of Miami on April 20, 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. He speaks Haitian Creole and Spanish fluently and preaches and celebrates Mass regularly in both languages. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy, and Master of Divinity from Boynton Beach Seminary.

10 auxiliary bishops have served the Archdiocese of Miami, but the current one is Peter Baldacchino. He attended a Redemptoris Mater seminary. He can speak Maltese, English, Italian, Creole, and Spanish. He was named Auxiliary Bishop of Miami Feb. 20, 2014. He has his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Divinity degrees.
