South Anchorage High School Families and Friends,

This is Dr. Deena Bishop, your ASD Superintendent. I want to take a moment to congratulate and celebrate the graduating class of 2020. Each of you have shown tremendous determination, strength and resiliency as you graduate from high school and transition into the next phase of your life. I have no doubt that you will have bright futures ahead of you. Our entire community is so impressed with your perseverance and positive attitude during these difficult times.

Wherever life takes you, remember that you always have a home at ASD. We are so proud of everything you’ve accomplished.

Grad Spotlight

There are many students at South that shine. The following is just a small sampling of these students.

Congratulations Isabelle Malvick

Isabelle Malvick is the 2020 South Valedictorian. She will be attending New York University in New York City, where she will major in neural science and minor in psychology and French with an ultimate goal of attending medical school and becoming a neurosurgeon.

While at South, Isabelle served over 200 hours of community service with Key Club where she served one term as vice president and two terms as president. She participated in Partners’ Club all four years and served as president twice and is a member of the National Honor Society. Additionally, she completed a Gifted Mentorship with Anchorage Neurosurgical Associates and received the Seal of Biliteracy in French.

Congratulations Rhianna Merriman

Rhianna Merriman is the 2020 Salutatorian at South. She will be attending Montana State University where she will major in biochemistry on an academic full ride scholarship and also received a UPS scholarship.

At South, she swam on the varsity swim team all four years and went to state three years. She is a member of the National Honor Society.

Congratulations Aedyn Concepcion

Aedyn Concepcion is graduating Magna Cum Laude from South. He will be attending Gardner Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. He received a scholarship for wrestling at this Division 1 school and will major in business marketing.

He is South’s only four time state wrestling champion.

Congratulations Dylan Yarger

Dylan Yager is graduating from South Summa Cum Laude. He will be attending Montana Tech in Butte, Montana where he will be majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Material Sciences and playing football for the Orediggers. He received a full Presidential Merit Scholarship and is a National Merit Scholarship recipient.

During his time at South, Dylan played football.

Congratulations Abbigail Lynn

Abbigail Lynn is graduating Magna Cum Laude and will be attending Martin Methodist College in Pulsaki, Tennessee. She will be majoring in criminal justice. She received a scholarship for competitive clay shooting.

While at South, she participated in Airforce JROTC and leaves as a Cadet Major. Outside of school she shot for Northern Lights SCPT.

Congratulations Claire Meeds

Claire Meeds is graduating Summa Cum Laude from South. She will attend California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, California majoring in biochemistry on a pre-med track. She received the Cal Poly National Green and Gold Scholarship.

While at South, Claire was the National Honor Society historian and participated in mixed choir where she accomplished the following: All-State Mixed Choir First Chair: Alto 1 2019; Superior (1) Rating at State Solo and Ensemble: Musical Theatre 2019; and All-State Choir all four years of high school

Congratulation Gage Webster

Gage Webster is graduating from South Magna Cum Laude. He will be attending the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, where he is majoring in business administration and playing baseball. He received a baseball scholarship.

During his time at South, Gage played baseball, basketball, and tennis. He was a Peer Mentor and served as the Mentorship secretary. He was nominated this year for Gatorade Player of the Year for Baseball.

Congratulations Alys Korosei

Alys Korosei is graduating Summa Cum Laude from South. She will be attending Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

At South, Alys was a member of the National Ocean Science Bowl and helped her team win State this year. She participated in cross country running, cross country skiing, soccer, and girls hockey where her team won State for 2018-19 and 2019-20. She received the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish and won the district level bookmark contest her freshman and junior years. She is a member of the National Honor Society and a Key Club officer.

Congratulations Grayling Peterson

Grayling Peterson is graduating Summa Cum Laude. He will be attending Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He is considering majoring in engineering physics.

Grayling received the Seal of Biliteracy in German. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the as the vice president of the Math Outreach Program. He received a scholarship to attend a sustainability summit hosted by the Goethe Institute in Chicago during the summer of 2019. He played two years of football and three of soccer with South. Grayling is an Eagle Scout

Congratulations Shelby Ottum

Shelby Ottum is graduating Summa Cum Laude from South she will be attending North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. She signed with the college to wrestle and received the Dean Scholarship, the highest academic scholarship at NCC. She was accepted into the College Honors Program and will be pursuing a degree in elementary education.

Shelby is a two-time Women's High School State Wrestling Champion. She was also a member of Alaskan's All American Women's Junior National Wrestling Team. In flag football, she was a captain and the starting quarterback of the 2019-20 State Championship team. She was also awarded First Team All Conference Quarterback and Second Team All Conference Safety. She is a member of the National Honor Society.

Congratulations Emma Hogge

Emma Hogge is graduating Magna Cum Laude from South. She will be attending Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah and will major in Music Education K-12 with an Instrumental Focus, then pursue medicine. She received the 2020 Hilcorp Energy College Scholarship, a Brigham Young University Music scholarship, and a Brigham Young University Marching Band scholarship.

Emma has over 100 hours of community/church service and received the Young Woman of Excellence Medallion. She was named the 2019-20 ASAA All State First Chair for Tuba and won Region 4 ASAA State Solo and Ensemble for Tuba 2016-2020. She made The National Association for Music Education (NAFME) All Northwest Band Music Festival for Tuba. She lettered in Music and Flag football and she is a member of the National Honor Society and yearbook.

Congratualtions Abigail Webster

Abigail Webster is graduating Summa Cum Laude with plans on attending Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona on a full tuition scholarship to major in French Horn Performance and to complete prerequisites for Physician Assistant School.

For the French horn, she received the First Chair Award at all four Allstate festivals from 2016-2019 and was given the Command Performance Honor at the State Solo and Ensemble Festival from 2017-2019. She played two concertos, once with the Anchorage Civic Orchestra and once with the Alaska Youth Orchestra. She was the first chair French horn in South’s symphonic band for four years. She played as a substitute with Anchorage Symphony Orchestra during the Harry Potter concert, the Nutcracker ballet, and the 2018-19 Season Finale.

Additionally, she participated in the Gifted Mentorship Program her junior year and shadowed an infectious disease doctor. She is a member of the National Honor Society and volunteered at the Alaska Zoo. She is also on the Performing Board of Directors of the Alaska Youth Orchestra for the 2019-20 season, volunteering her time for a musical cause.

Congratulations Hannah Hoggenson

Hannah Hogenson is graduating from South Magna Cum Laude. She will be attending Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota. She will be studying pre-physical therapy while playing Division I Hockey. She received a full hockey scholarship for four years.

During her time at South, Hannah played goalie for the boys hockey team, starting in the net and reaching the State championship all three seasons that she participated. She made the Team Alaska Boys Tier 1 during her years in high school. She was selected to the US National team in 2018 and was part of that team in Obihiro, Hokkaido Japan for the U-18 Women’s IIHF World Championships. Hannah is also a 2019 USA Today consensus 1st team All-American for girls high school hockey.

We are the champions. South won State in Flag Football, Boys Football, Volleyball, Gymnastics, Girls X-Country Running, Tennis, and Gymnastics. Boys basketball was heading to states and many of our spring sports were predicted to have an outstanding season.
