Welcome to our 2020 Conference Overview
Building on the success of our wonderful #PPMAHR19, we are delighted to be holding #PPMAHR20 in Manchester at one of the most iconic venues in the City - The Midland Hotel.
This beautiful building was completed in 1903 and it has been the site of some significant events. History has it that the founders of Rolls Royce cemented their partnership at The Midland.
In terms of social history, this is also the place where Posh and Becks had their first date! So the Hotel has seen many interesting happenings over the years and of course #PPMAHR20 will be another of those.
All conference events, apart from the social event on Monday 30th March will be held here. Our overflow accommodation is at The Jury's Inn, which is just opposite The Midland.
This overview will give you a flavour of our plans for the event. You can find out much more, including the conference agenda, on our conference website pages. Please do come and find out more.
Our conference theme
The overwhelming feedback from #PPMAHR19 is that you valued a conference event that had a golden thread, an overarching theme. And an event that makes a bit of magic too.
Examining a theme from the perspective of our Let's Talk: themes in main stage sessions, supplemented by fringe sessions that also address the important day to day issues that we deal, is what matters to you.
We've taken all of your feedback into account and your ideas too. And we are delighted to announce that the theme for #PPMAHR20 is........
Tomorrow's World: Purposeful Work and Lives
Why Tomorrow's World?
Simply put, we can't ignore tomorrow. How we approach our future is ever more important. We can't separate it from the now and we can't think about it as yet another task on the ever growing list of things to do. The future has been talked about before of course, but we are choosing to tackle this holistically, through the lenses of our strategic themes.
Arguably, we are at another inflection point in history. Global politics are profoundly unstable and this has an enormous influence on our national and local realities. The lines between our working and home lives are blurring even more and activism is a powerful motivator for change.
Human beings are complex, emotional beings. Our awareness of this is perhaps greater than it has been before in the world of work. As is our understanding that purpose matters too.
So our Let's Talk: Future Workforce theme is timely. Tomorrow's world means that our workforces of the future need to be shaped now. AND we need to think about purposeful work but purposeful lives more broadly. As HR & OD professionals we need to work with all of our colleagues to truly understand our challenges, identify and shape the possibilities and bring them to life. And we absolutely have to be embedding Walk Tall: Being a 21st Century Public Servant.
We'll be looking at what the futurologists are saying, exploring future tech, multi-generational workforces, the impact of climate change, transgender workplaces and many other issues.
It's going to be a proactive, energising, innovative and thought provoking 3 days. We look forward to sharing that with you.
We are proud to be bringing you speakers such as Dr Max McKeown to conference. Max is a behavioural strategist, author and scientist. He has written numerous books including #NOW: The psychology of always moving forward and Adaptability: The Art of Winning in an Age of Uncertainty.
Megan Reitz, author of multiple books, including Speak Up (with John Higgins) is also joining us. Megan is a renowned facilitator, executive coach, researcher and author dedicated to exploring and finding ways to improve the way people interact with one another in the workplace. She brings a wealth of experience, research and thought leadership. One of her current themes, which aligns so closely to our work is how we can encourage "dialogue which is humane and which enables us, our colleagues and our society to flourish".
Victoria Tomlinson has had a highly successful award-winning career in professional services and public relations. Increasingly, the last few years has seen she and her team focus on multigenerational workforces - and specifically un-retirement. How we think about and engage with colleagues who want to work and contribute in different ways - and not just because they are older - is very timely.
Yazad Dalal is a returning speaker from 2019. He is a passionate advocate for the benefits of technology and how we can use it to enhance our workplaces. Future ready HR technology will be critical to how effectively we shape our tomorrows.
A conference programme that works
Day 1 pre-conference activity will start with a Hackathon. Working with community groups across Greater Manchester, we will be actively exploring our conference theme from the perspective of our fellow citizens.
The afternoon of Day 1 will start with our conference keynote speaker, our Annual General Meeting and our conference social event. We're excited to share that this year we are going to spend a fun evening at The Flight Club in Manchester.
Day 2 will see us dive into conference proper. After a day of thought provoking speakers and networking with sponsors and peers, we will be celebrating our amazing Excellence in People Management Award winners at our Annual Gala Dinner. We've chosen a fabulous charity this year too.
We're keeping our gala dinner theme a secret until our awards shortlisting event on Wednesday 12th February 2020. But don't worry, you'll still have plenty of time to plan your outfits!
Day 3 will see a half day of great speakers and a final opportunity to talk to sponsors, have some reflection time and network with old friends. We hope that you will have made new friends too by the end of conference too.
The full conference agenda is available on the website here. We'll keep you posted on progress through our conference App, regular member newsletters and our Conference webpages.

Loyal, engaging and thought provoking sponsors
We can't put on the quality of annual conference and regional events that we want to without the support of our sponsor community.
We are really proud of our longstanding relationships. For PPMA members, our sponsor community gives us a fantastic opportunity to ask questions, contribute to products and solutions and share information about our challenges and opportunities. Open and dynamic conversations will help us contribute to our future workforces.
Annual conference will see us welcoming back familiar faces and saying hello to new organisations.
Please give generously
We have a track record of raising money for Charity that we can rightly be proud of. And it's an important Gala Dinner tradition. Our Gala Dinner Charity for 2020 is 'Spreading the Happiness'. This amazing charity is run by our friend Shonette Bason and Patricia Gibb (Shonette's mum).
School holidays are not always a time of fun for families living below the poverty line. For these families, school holidays often mean that they do not have enough money to feed their children. This has become known as 'holiday hunger'.
The Charity distributes Happiness Hampers to families in need. It provides a week’s worth of food and toiletry hampers to schools for the shorter holidays and three weeks’ worth for the summer holidays. Schools supported in this way are selected using their score on the IDACI (Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index)
We will be raising money through our Charity Raffle and as ever we will have some fantastic prizes.
This amazing Charity is attracting support from a range of businesses, but demand is outstripping resources. So please give generously, it will make a substantial difference to people very much in need.
