The town of Zihuatanejo de Azueta is located in the state of Mexican state of Guerrero, on the Pacific coast of the country. The state is divided into three regions: La Montaña (mountains), Tierra Calienta (hot lands), and La Costa (the coast.)

Tourism is a driving economic factor, with towns along the coast such as Acapulco being the main source of employment. Lack of education and employment beyond the tourism industry lead to a high population of migration. Crops grown in the state include coffee, sesame seeds, sugar cane, hibiscus, peanuts, and sorghum. Guerrero is also a leading global producer of poppy flower.
