What’s in your Pack? Useful tips

I’m focusing on useful tips for the day hiker. A daypack is essential. But what should you put in it?

Water: A general rule of thumb is 1 liter per 5 miles hiked. Some people choose to take a Camelback type hydration system.

Snacks: Trailmix is a favorite of mine. Granola or protein bars. Cut up fruit like apple. Jerky of any sort. Nut Butter and Jelly sandwich. You should avoid foods that will spoil like dairy items or meat.

First Aid: a small basic first aid kit is a great thing to keep in your pack. Just a few Bandaids, Neosporin, feminine hygiene products (you never know), antihistamines, ibuprofen, essential medication, alcohol wipes, hand sanitizer.

Navigation: Always have a map downloaded or a paper map. Compass (maybe)

Sunscreen

Plastic bag: in case you get items wet or muddy

Identification

Packable coat or other long sleeved layer
