what is matter? by sunnie morris

Matter is defined as anything that has mass (an amount of matter in an object) and occupies space (which is measured as volume).

pure substance-Pure substances are defined as substances that are made of only one type of atom or only one type of molecule (a group of atoms bonded together).

differences between substance and a mixture
ELEMENT-EACH OF MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED SUBSTANCES THAT CANNOT BE CHEMICALLY INTERCONVERTED OR BROKEN DOWN INTO SIMPLER SUBSTANCES AND ARE PRIMARY CONSTITUENTS OF MATTER
COMPOUND-A THING THAT IS COMPOSED OF TWO OR MORE SEPARATE ELEMENTS; A MIXTURE.
mixture

mixture-a substance made by mixing other substances together.

Homogeneous Mixture: A mixture which has uniform composition and properties throughout. For example, air is a homogeneous mixture of gases. A teaspoonful of table salt stirred into a glass of water also makes a homogeneous mixture.
A homogeneous mixture has the same uniform appearance and composition throughout. Many homogeneous mixtures are commonly referred to as solutions.
Heterogeneous Mixtures. A mixture is a combination of two or more pure substances in which the original substances retain their chemical properties. In some mixtures, the initial substances cannot be detected after they have been mixed
A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture in which solute-like particles settle out of a solvent-like phase some time after their introduction
A colloid is a homogeneous solution with intermediate particle size between a solution and a suspension. Colloid particles may be seen in a beam of light such as dust in air in a "shaft" of sunlight. Milk, fog, and jello are examples of colloids. In contrast a suspension is a heterogeneous mixture of larger particles.
