Newsletter 23rd October 2019

Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Kia Orana, Fakalafa lahi atu, Namaste, Ni sa bula vinaka, Konichiwa

I trust you all had a wonderful holiday. It was a real joy to see the smiling faces flooding back in the gate for the start of term. A very warm welcome to all the new families who have joined our school learning community. I know that you will really enjoy all aspects of school life.

Our school continues to grow fast and we now have 635 students.

We have an exciting term ahead of us including junior tabloid sports and senior athletics days and I personally can’t wait to see our amazing choir perform at the Kids for Kids Concert on Wednesday 13th November at the Vodafone Events Centre.

Our concert is on Wednesday 13 November at the Vodafone Events Centre, 7.30 pm.
We’re really excited to be participating in the Kids for Kids choir concert for the first time. This show is jam-packed with 100% Kiwi-loved songs, fronted by iconic Kiwi entertainer Jackie Clarke and musician Nathan King. This year’s Kids for Kids concert is all about celebrating Aotearoa’s ‘Big Aroha’, seeing young people come together to celebrate some of the best of Kiwi music and participate in a mass choir performance.

Year 5 Mangere Mountain Trip

This week our Year 5 children visited Mangere Mountain. The purpose of the trip was to learn about our local history and to be immersed in Maori culture.

Te Pane o Mataoho, as Mangere Mountain was originally known, first erupted around 70 000 years ago and is one of the best-preserved of Auckland’s many volcanic cones. The fertile volcanic soils sustained one of the largest pre-colonial cities in Aotearoa, New Zealand and was a significant pa (fortified village) of the local iwi (tribe), Te Wai o Hua.

Students participated in a Mihi whakatau (welcome), two workshops and had a hikoi (guided walk) up Mangere Mountain.

Junior School Pop Up Museum

Our junior tamariki loved sharing their treasured items at the end of last term.

Our ‘Pop Up Museum’ has been a huge success. A big thanks to all the parents who visited the exhibits in each classroom.

Students for 2020/Parent Information Morning

We are starting to consider the make-up of our classes for 2020. To help us with this job, it is useful to be informed of any new students who intend coming to Chapel Downs and of any families who are leaving. If you have neighbours, family or friends who are planning to come here please encourage them to pre-enrol. Our parent information morning will be held on Thursday 14th November .

Please ring the office on(09) 274 8002 if you would like to attend.

Term 4-Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews

It is well established that schools with a close home and school partnership are more successful in meeting goals and targets for learning and teaching. The team is looking forward to reporting to you on students’ progress against their learning goals. Parent / Student / Teacher interviews will be held in week seven – Thursday 28th November from 2pm

Enrolments

If your child is turning 5 in the next 12 months (born in 2015 or 2016) please ensure you enrol them as soon as possible. Dropping Children Off

Dropping children off as close to the school gate as possible may be convenient for you, but can cost another family a lifetime of pain and suffering. All our children deserve the chance to grow up and experience life to it’s fullest.

Parking restrictions are in place near Chapel Downs for a reason. They protect our communities’ children.

 Always observe all parking restrictions near our school.

 Do not park across the drive ways or on yellow lines

 Always use the school patrol crossing

 Choose safety over convenience at all times

 Walk to and from school with your children when possible

Because of increased traffic at our Chapel Road pick up zone we have decided to close the Chapel Road entry from 3pm till 3.15pm. Thanks for your support.

Just a reminder to all parents of Year 6 students - it is now time to get your enrolment process under way for Intermediate in 2020. Please check each school's website for enrolment details. Each school has a different timeline for when in zone enrolments and out of zone applications are due.
