TEL for All August 2018

Welcome back to everyone after the summer holidays and welcome to the first edition of TEL for All, an online newsletter for all GRETB FET staff. The purpose of this newsletter is to promote and provide information on how to use Technology Enhanced Learning in classrooms and will include short 'how to' videos, examples of best practice, upcoming CPD events, and links to useful resources. This is your newsletter and if you have any good examples of TEL that is being used in your centre that you would like to share, please email alison.jones@gretb.ie and we will include it in this newsletter. Enjoy and, please, send us your feedback and articles!

Our TEL Initiative: Eithne Nic Dhonnchadha, Director of FET

‘I am delighted to announce our first newsletter for TEL. As you know , Technology Enhanced Learning is progressive in terms of educational methodologies and we are delighted that we in GRETB were very much to the forefront of the development of the SOLAS TEL framework. Today I am welcoming Aoife Fitzsimons as TEL co-ordinator. Aoife will be working with us to roll out a number of TEL initiatives and assisting us in promoting and developing the whole Technology Enhanced learning landscape. As you are aware, education and training opportunities are constantly evolving to meet the skill gaps of employers and as a consequence of this we in FET must adapt and change our programmes and modes of delivery. On-line and blended learning will become a significant feature of our programmes in the coming years. I am requesting that you take this opportunity to engage in a TEL initiative over the coming months to ensure that your skills are updated and developed. It is important that we as a FET team are up to date and up to speed with all new technologies and methodologies in teaching and learning. This is an exciting time in education and a great opportunity for us as managers, teachers, tutors, instructors and co-ordinators to participate in the roll-out of TEL initiatives that meet our own direct requirements in terms of upskilling. I am very much looking forward to this initiative and seeing the results in 12 months’ time.'

Kahoot in the Classroom

Interested in using Kahoot? If so, here's a short video explaining how to get started. Once you have created your Kahoot, you can direct your students to kahoot.it to input the play code, or even better, download the app and play the game from there. One new feature of Kahoot is the Challenge button. This is ideal for reinforcing learning at home. One more thing...check out the 'My Results' button for a full analysis of your game once you've played it in class.

Useful Apps and Websites

Please send on information of any websites or apps that you have found useful and we can include them here in the next newsletter. Here's a useful, multi-faceted website to start with:

rewordify.com: once you have pasted text from a document or web page, this website will simplify the text for you. On top of that, there are a multitude of worksheets that it will generate, e.g. word meanings, spelling tests, cloze exercises, that can be created from the text as well. The Demo option is highly recommended before you begin in order to appreciate all the features of this tool.
