CRONINGER ELEMENTARY REPAIR FWCS Building Renovation

RENOVATIONS AT Croninger ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OCCURRED during the summer of 2014. WORK INCLUDED BOTH EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR IMPROVEMENTS TO THE FACILITY, which opened in 1966. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT THE EXISTING BUILDING HAS RECEIVED A FULL SCALE RENOVATION.
Single pane window and panel systems being removed.
THE SINGLE PANE EXTERIOR WINDOW SYSTEMS WERE REPLACED WITH NEW THERMALLY EFFICIENT WINDOW AND INSULATED METAL PANEL SYSTEMS. THE OVERALL AMOUNT OF GLASS WAS DECREASED, BOTH TO ADD INSULATED WALL SPACE AND TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL WALL DISPLAY SURFACE AREA WITHIN THE CLASSROOMS. THE EXTERIOR WALLS WERE ALSO TREATED WITH FOAM SPRAY INSULATION ON THE INTERIOR TO ADD TO THE AIR-TIGHTNESS OF THE BUILDING ENVELOPE.
The building renovation included new distribution piping from the boilers, new unit ventilators in classrooms, and added air conditioning to the building.
the boilers at croninger had been replaced previously and were in good condition, but the distribution piping throughout the building was in need of replacement. THE BUILDING ALSO DID NOT HAVE AIR CONDITIONING. AS PART OF THE RENOVATION, A CENTRAL CHILLER, ALL NEW DISTRIBUTION PIPING and UNIT VENTILATORS were installed in each CLASSROOM as well as new TEMPERATURE CONTROL SYSTEMS.

Classrooms received brighter, energy efficient lighting and new finishes. Asbestos containing tile-floors were removed and abated and replaced with new VCT flooring and carpet. Teacher wardrobe units and student cubbies and coat hook areas provide storage for classroom materials and outerwear. Wood doors damaged from years of use were replaced and new security hardware was installed on each classroom door.

Chalkboards, maps, and older televisions were replaced with markerboards, tackboards, and new projection and audio/video systems for teaching. Ceilings were replaced and the walls received a fresh coat of paint.

Upon completion of the new heating and cooling piping main installations, new ceilings and energy efficient lighting were installed in corridors. The walls were painted and the terrazzo floors were stripped of wax, sealed and polished with a high gloss no wax finish, thereby reducing ongoing maintenance costs.
The multipurpose room received new heating and cooling, energy efficient LED lighting and a fresh coat of paint on walls and ceilings.
Collaboration and intervention spaces were made more inviting by the replacement of glass wall systems and the application of simple vinyl graphics. All plumbing fixtures throughout the building were replaced, including the addition of bottle fillers on drinking fountains.

The Media Center features an open ceiling concept with new energy efficient lighting, a larger circulation desk, new finishes and shelving and more room for reading groups, study and collaboration.

The referendum funded improvements also included the addition of a parent pick-up lane (loop drive around building) to allow room for vehicles to stack during drop off and pick up times and decrease traffic backup on Trier Road
Croninger Elementary is also the communications magnet school. In support of this program, the student television studio was relocated into a larger space, complete with a production room and green screen wall.
A display wall with monitor for scrolling announcements and broadcasts greets students and visitors to the building.

The renovations to Croninger Elementary School, along with full renovations at 9 other school buildings, the addition of chillers at 6 additional buildings, window replacements at 8 additional buildings and partial roof replacements at 27 buildings was made possible by the support of our community.
