What are Intramural Sports?

Intramural sports are competitions between individuals or teams of students of the same university campus. Intramural team sports normally have a regular season that builds up to play-offs and an eventual campus-wide championship. Intramural individual sports normally have a one-day tournament that determines the campus champion. Intramural teams normally do not have coaches nor have practices and play primarily for fun and recreation. Some intramural leagues are co-recreational, meaning men and women compete together.

Player skills levels range from intermediate to advance. Beginners are strongly encouraged to participate in open recreation in that sport to gauge their skill level prior to registering for an intramural sport. The Department of Sports & Fitness at the University of Houston-Downtown organizes the competitions and the participants organize the teams. Players without teams may sign up as free agents. All the players have to do is show up, play fair and have a great time.

Summer 2021 Intramural Sports

In order to provide a safe return to campus in the midst of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the University of Houston-Downtown has implemented a table of 4 color coded steps of response. Step 1 Red, Step 2 Orange, Step 3 Yellow and Step 4 Green. These colors/steps and responses are explained in greater detail at www.uhd.edu/coronavirus. UHD is currently at Step 2 Orange. Sports and Fitness will offer all virtual activities for students at this level; fitness classes, personal training, online sports, fitness challenges, club sports interest meetings, etc. Face to face exercise and sports activities present a very high level of COVID-19 risk at these two steps.

Step 3 Yellow: The Student Life Center will reopen with limited hours and activities and with coronavirus safety protocols in place. The Sports Field will remain closed. Face to face sports activities still present a very high level of COVID-19 risk at this step. It has been announced that the University will move to Step 3 Yellow on June 1, 2021.

Step 4 Green: All normal exercise and sports activities can resume at this step. It has been announced that the University will move to Step 4 Green on July 12, 2021.

What are Club Sports?

A sport club is an organized group of students established to promote the interest and skills of its members in a particular physical activity. Sports & Fitness oversees the sport clubs on campus and reserves the right to approve members. Non-competitive sport clubs are primarily instructive in nature tending to focus on learning new skills and developing interest in the activity within the university community. Competitive sport clubs allow members to experience intercollegiate competition beyond intramural sports.

Sport clubs may represent the university in local, regional and national competitions. Team members are expected to possess more advanced playing skills, make commitment to practices, possess a positive attitude, and be supportive of teammates. Tryouts are held where club team coaches select the roster. Sports club members must be current UHD students and meet a UHD cumulative minimum GPA requirement. New incoming students are exempt from this requirement if they are attending their first semester at UHD.

Summer 2021 Interest Meetings

Club sports teams will begin tryout periods in August for UHD students enrolled for fall 2021. Prior to tryout periods, club sports teams will have summer interest meetings that will feature a meet and greet with club head coaches and interested members. Come out and shoot around, volley the volleyball, or kick the soccer ball around while meeting other students that will be trying out as well. Get yourself comfortable and ready for the upcoming season in club sports.

All participants are strongly urged to consult a physician for a thorough examination prior to any exercise. Sports & Fitness also strongly suggests all individuals have sufficient health insurance coverage prior to participation.
