Arba'een Tehran bazaar

Arba'een is a Shia Muslim religious observance that commemorates the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. It occurs forty days after the Day of Ashura.

The passion of mourning is seen on the faces of all participants.

Throughout the day free food and drink are distributed to all, to devout followers and visiting 'infidels' with equal generosity.

While this is a time of deep religious passion onlookers are welcomed with typical Iranian warmth.
