Jim Crow laws

White and black children could NOT attend the same school. They had to be separated into a colored school for blacks and a white school for whites. Usually the white schools were nicer and colored schools were shack-like. Blacks did not get the same rights education because they couldn't afford it.

This law states that a white can not marry a black. They couldn't even show affection or emotion to each other. If they did, the Black was sentenced to death because he/she didn't follow the law. If the white showed affection to a black, the Black would still die.

The Great Depression

The Great Depression was a period of time, between the 1920's and the 1930's, when the stock market crashed and everyone had little to no money. The Great Depression is considered to be the worst economic depression in US history. Many prices whee dropping for goods like cotton. For example, it would be 27.98 cents/pound, descreases to 19.54/pound and then to 7.45/pound. The people of the 1920's were also battling a horrible drought in an area known as the Dust Bowl. This relates to Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry because their family sold cotton and were getting less money. This effected their family by Papa having to leave and go work for the mines to get more money.

Abolishment of Slavery

The time of Slavery was a tough time for African Americans. They were put to hard work and could do anything about what was happening to them. When Abraham Lincoln declared slavery illegal, African Americans were probably happy to be free. Blacks could proceed with a normal life, but still be mistreated because they are a different color, and whites think they are better. In "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry", it states that, "“So now, even though seventy years have passed since slavery, most white people still think of us as they did then—that we’re not as good as they are—and people like Mr. Simms hold on to that belief harder than some other folks because they have little else to hold on to." (Taylor 301). This says that white people think they are better because they weren't the slaves long ago. According to Abraham Lincoln, "All persons held as slaves within any State in rebellion against the United States, shall be forever free." This though didn't state that they shouldn't be mistreated and killed for actions that white people did and got away with.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." -The Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America.

Lynching is a way of killing people in the south without a trial. When the rules weren't followed or black people were suspects for a crime, they would get lynched. This relates to Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry because T.J., Mr. Morrison and Papa were going to get lynched. As stated in the book, “Mr. Jamison was telling him that the sheriff or nobody else was ’bout to stop a hanging on that flimsy message he’d sent up to the Averys’. (Taylor 555)"
