In wet and windy conditions, both sides started the match aggressively with contested possessions a real focus from the get go. The Bays hit the scoreboard early as small forward Terry Milera was set up by Ian Milera to kick Glenelg's first from 10 metres out.
The Redlegs responded instantly as Simon Phillips found space on the outer wing to find Luke Surman 35 metres out from goal. Norwood kicked their second of the match four minutes after as Declan Hamilton found space inside 50 to kick his first of the match.
The rest of the first quarter was a real arm wrestle with the wind doing neither side any favours as the last six scores for the quarter were behinds.
Norwood needed a response and found one as running half back Matt Fuller found space just outside 50 to kick a long goal reducing the margin to just two points. The Bays finished the second term up by 16 points courtesy of late goals from Travis Schott and former Port forward Luke Reynolds.
After the main break Glenelg went on the attack booting six goals for the quarter keeping Norwood goalless. Despite the Redlegs endeavour, Glenelg were just too strong gaining the clearances from stoppages and then capitalising when it counted.
Norwood’s day didn’t get any better when Brady Dawe didn’t take any further part injuring his groin at the start of the third quarter.
However it was just all too late for Norwood, losing out on marks for the match (107 to 90) and inside 50 entries (56-48). The Legs fell in the end by 31-points bringing their season record to 1 and 2 after three rounds.
Norwood now faces a tough trip to Prospect this week to face an in form North Adelaide outfit. The Redlegs will be looking to respond on Saturday afternoon.
Norwood Reserves Match Report
Norwood’s Reserves registered their second win of the year defeating Glenelg by 17-points at Gliderol Stadium on Saturday afternoon. In a tough match Norwood held off the Bays all day holding the lead right through to the final siren. Former Port Magpie forward Kieran Agius played his role booting three majors, while new recruit Josh Glenn enjoyed the conditions gathering 23 disposals and kicking two goals. Midfielder, Alex Forster also pressed his claim for selection collecting 30 disposals which included 10 marks and four inside 50’s. Norwood worked hard throughout the match spreading quickly in order to stretch the Bays to generate attacks.
Defensively, Norwood was sound despite conceding two late goals which put the margin to 17-points. A real highlight from the match was Norwood’s ability to take marks (58 to 78) and then capitalise to create scoreboard pressure. Gavin Hughes coach of the Reserves will take a lot of confidence out of the match and will look to continue this form against North Adelaide next week. One disappointing aspect from the match was that Anthony Giannini re-injured his hamstring early in the contest. Giannini will be out for a few weeks and will be monitored throughout the coming weeks.
