Weathering Breaking down rock into sediment

Weathering is the natural process that breaks down rock into sediment. Rock can be broken down physically or chemically.

Physical Weathering

Waves, wind, ice, flowing water, and temperature changes can all cause physical weathering.

Crashing waves

Crashing waves will physically weather rocks over time.

Flowing water

Flowing water will physically weather rocks over time.

Strong winds

Strong winds carrying sand or silt will physically weather rocks over time.

Ice wedging

Rain that seeps into the cracks of rocks and freezes will expand up to 10% in volume. The pressure from the expanding ice will widen and deepen the cracks. This is called ice wedging, and it will physically weather rocks over time.

In addition to the forces of water, wind, and ice wedging, large temperature changes from day to night will weaken and physically weather rocks over time.
